2024/25 Abdoulaye Doucoure

"A club that wouldn't sign an Irish Catholic for almost 100 years,"
is this true, I'm from Ireland, I obviously support everton but Liverpool and United would be the 2 best supported teams in the country .
I’m from Belfast and I can tell you now that Liverpool’s biggest following is by staunch loyalists.

I’ve never understood this apparent ‘Irish’ link they have. It’s a myth. The sole reason my dad and brother started supporting Everton and then got me into it was because they were always the Irish team.

I get that none of this really matters by the way, as it’s football and should be enjoyed by all. But it’s the lies that gets me and we all know their ability to do that.

He has been awful all season but that makes up for it. Loved seeing him give them some even if he got a deserved red card for it. Gives their fans something else to moan at too.

We can celebrate. But really, he shouldn’t have done what he did. We love a bit of sh**housery but that was only ending one way. It doesn’t excuse how Jones went through the back of him though, and certainly doesn’t excuse the racist abuse he has received since. Or the bottle being thrown which hit Pickford who was trying to calm it down.
He only gave a fist pump to the away crowd. Why are they so precious?

He went and shushed them. I get it, it’s not much, but he went out his way to do so rather than celebrating with his own fans.

If the game had ended with him stood just in front of them and he fist pumped, fair enough. But he didn’t, he ran across to them to shush them. We would be as livid as them if one of their players did that to us.

Personally don’t mind a bit of craic between players/fans - if fans give it out they should expect it back. But he was intentionally riling them up (which the league is clamping down on anyway).

Let's get it right - he's not alone here. I watched Steven Gerrard run past the Bullens Rd with his hand cupped to his ear one year. I watched Suarez dive in celebration in front of our dugout. I watched Michael Owen shush the Gwladys Street end in celebration after he scored a winner once.

I get it, you shouldn't do it, but let's not pretend he's the first player to incite a crowd at a derby.

Who is pretending that? People acting like they are being all precious about it while we still get fans bringing up the Suarez incident etc.

The fact we still have people whinging about the Suarez incident shows how much things like that p*** people off. Also doesn’t mean that it’s ok for doucoure to now do it because others did it in the past.

I enjoyed it. I like player fan interaction when they have been giving it the big ones. But let’s not act surprised that their players and fans then react to it.

Mad old player is Doucs...both a cult hero of sorts and also probably our biggest scapegoat. Probably the epitome of where we have been as a club...hard working but lacking that quality.

For me he will always get a free pass for standing up when it really mattered against Bournemouth with that screamer - that coupled with moments like last night when he shows he truly cares about the club.

Desperately need better than him but when he eventually moves on it will be with thanks from me.

I'm arguing the other side of it there though - three occasions their players have deliberately incited the crowd here have instantly sprung to mind. All I'm saying is that it shouldn't happen but they don't really have any right to complain.

….not in a single post have I not suggested we need to move on from Doucoure. I’m extremely critical of his lack of quality in possession, it cost us again last night. I’ve regularly posted that when we win games without him is when we’ve truly improved.

Saying that, what I absolutely recognise is his effectiveness and the critical part he’s played in maintaining our top flight status. For that I’ll always be grateful. Moyes was full of praise for him last night, saying how important he is to the team.

Prepare yourself, there might just be another contract offer for him soon ;)
He was full of praise for all the players. He’s not going to criticise any of them. He’s not a David Moyes number 10 and he’s also not stupid, it may also not be his decision

So the official statement from the pl is that doucoure was issued a second yellow following an altercation. This needs to be looked at very closely...he was attacked by jones. Now if the pl changes their official explanation to something like he was antagonising the fans then that is a complete different argument but they decided to choose the easy route out.

He's not a scapegoat, he's just a terrible footballer.

They can’t look at it as it’s a second yellow. They only look at reds. It was a booking regardless of whatever reason they have put out to the media.

You might be right but I don't know. If one of their players did that to us I would give them a load of stick at the time but I wouldn't be 'livid' about it once it had happened. Van Dijk was getting their entire team to come over and celebrate in the corner of the Gwladys after their first goal, he didn't seem to think that was provocative but then totally lost his rag at Doucoure. For me it's just part of the game.
