It does make you wonder what O'Brien did in practice to get completely buried by Dyche so he could play Ashley Young instead.
Nothing, just a combo of the manager putting self interest over the good of the team and playing his old friend Ashley, and if you believe it a refusal to entertain giving Jake a shot as he never agreed to the signing in the first place and wanted to show everybody that he's the boss.
 
It does make you wonder what O'Brien did in practice to get completely buried by Dyche so he could play Ashley Young instead.

There's a chance that for some inexplicable reason he wasn't trying in training.

I think I'll go with the far, far likelier scenario that Dyche was horribly stubborn and just decided he couldn't lace Ashley Youngs boots without much evidence.
