Running

I was out for a 14 miler in the ice last Thursday ,then a long run where I ran around the mean but ice free streets of a local village , Monday was a slow plod in the snow . Yesterday was a white out so I jogged down to the local council -owned gym and ran on the treadmill for 8 miles including 8 x 4 minutes bursts and a slow plod home. The tredder worked out well , not my first choice but it’s allowed me to get the mileage in as part of my marathon training.
What trainers are you using for your longer runs? I'm not training for anything I'm just running approximately 3 times a week with one run normally being a long 2 hours.
I'm using Nike Pegasus at the moment but I'm finding them not cushioned enough.

Pegasus used to be excellent runners, but last time I brought a pair I ended up with a foot problem.

Currently run in mizuno wave riders. Not everyone's cup of tea, but do for me. Hoka trainers are mad cushioned but take getting used to.

I’ve switched to Saucony in the past couple of years . Their Triumph 21 are my go-too cushioning shoes for general runs including long runs , but I also use Saucony Pro 3 if I want something a bit faster but cushioned . I did an 18 miler in my Pro 3’s yesterday, my longest training run for 10 months , and they were fine.

Agree about Hoka and cushioning . I have a pair of Hoka Bondi X which I use for recovery short runs only , they are heavy , clumpy , but super cushioned and good if my legs are beat up and I’m happy to run very slowly.

I use Hoka Challenger, Hoka Speedgoat and Hoka Torrent for trail running, depending on the conditions. I’ve also got a pair of Hoka Rincon for the odd time I go on the road.

I love them, but they do take a bit of getting used to, as they feel like boats on your feet when you first start with them.

A podiatrist I used to see, who was a mad ultra runner ( marathon des sable and the likes ) swore by them and convinced me to start using them.

This was well before Hoka were fashionable.

I remember going to one race and people sniggering at them šŸ˜‚

Indeed! I’ve had my Challengers for over 5 years I think , I don’t use them often but they’re great for X-Country, Trails and orienteering etc. The grip is not great but suitable for my needs .

They`re the best hybrid trail / road shoe ( imo )

They`re exactly the same as the best selling Clifton, but with a bit more of a chunky tread.

Great on hard packed, non technical terrain - forest tracks and gravel footpaths.

Anyone done any half marathons (or full) in Europe that they would recommend, doesn't have to be the big popular ones that sell out quick, was looking to combine a weekend away with a half marathon somewhere. All marathons (full or half) I've done have been in the UK or Ireland, was looking to maybe do one somewhere else later in the year

You probably need to go onto a specialist site, as there’s companies in the UK that organise them as semi package holidays - Rat Race and Trail Pursuit are two that spring to mind ( off road though )

If you want a couple of road, that are different in the UK:

The Langdale Half Marathon - tough and you won’t get more scenic and ten mins from Ambleside.

Lake Vrnwy Half - a fast course in stunning scenery, with a truly beautiful hotel on the course.

Just signed up for the Liverpool half in the build-up to the Manchester Marathon. Just wondering if anyone had seen any decent sales online for running trainers?

Going to need to replace my current trainers around mid March but would buy now if there was any sales on.

Currently using New Balance 860's for the cushioning.

I often look at 1/2 marathons in Europe that are accessible from Schipol airport by train as I quite fancy doing that . If you do a search you’ll find a couple of sites with listings in Europe, many quite small and touristy and as far as I can tell easy to enter . Amsterdam itself has a flat 1/2 and full marathon which are quite large but well organised.
