Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Low block high block wasn’t even a thing when Moyes was here. We always had rapid players in our back four like Jags, Yobo, Lescott, Distin and Coleman that mean we could play a high line. We got pushed back against the better teams. But we didn’t play counter attacking football. We still tried go through phases of possession. The game was played completely differently back then. Keepers didn’t get involved in the build up.
Ermm. Okay??!

We sat deep and ceded possession whenever under pressure and then tried to move forward quickly, often relying on a counter-attack. There was some greater variation when we got velcro-chest Fellaini in, so we could get the ball forward quickly and interplay around him, hence many people believing that the best football we played was in Moyes' last season - when we also added . . . pace! The right-hand side with Coleman and Mirallas was pace orientated. We always struggled with pace.

I think you're splitting hairs over the semantics. Some people loved Moyes, some hated him. I'm more indifferent, but feel he should have been able to take us to the next step just by removing some of his blinkers. Trying to play the way we did without more pace was one of them to me. It's each to their own, but it used to drive me absolutely mad.

I agree with you here, to play counter attack we do need pace but also better quality. I think Moyes will get more out of the squad because he coaches and has a counter structure to get the ball in the box unlike scotch egg head. Certain players Lindstrom, Harrison even and Patterson could improve in his set up. But we need that rapid threat in behind and have for years, that is why we are looking at Nuamah but he is a gamble maybe names will pop up in the next few weeks already in this league or in the Champ.

Ermm. Okay? We played our best football when Yakubu had his best season and Piennar and Arteta were both in the team around 2008. When Moyes actually had a squad of players to chose from including Andy Johnson who was notably rapid. Your talking like it's a Moyes tactic not to have pace but it comes down to player availability and finances. There is a premium to pay for attacking players, particularly fast ones and they don't grow on trees. Some seasons Moyes had literally no budget at all which was very frustrating. I always felt the squad was 2 starters and 2 squad players short of being a genuine champions league squad but Moyes was never backed in the transfer market.

All fair and true.

Cant use that as examples of how he'll want to go for things now though. Been so long and as you say, games changed.

Sunderland and Wham hes built squads which were short term and overall bar a couple of players, low resale value.

I reckon if he went for the previous style we had in his first stint with that level of player we'd be near the top places...but i dont think he'll do that this time.

Stubbs and Weir centre back partnership......

Absolute glorious place como. Got to be one of the best places to live as professional footballer that just ahead of Walton.
Sorry mate, having been to Lake Como many times, I can categorically state that you can’t get decent steak pie, chips & mushies anywhere. On that basis, I would say Beto will blow it out!

Thelwell has a huge task on his hands this month, whatever his financial constraints are! Domestic loans are all tied up, so he needs either overseas loans or permanent deals. Give the number of players off contract in the summer, permanent deals might be the way to go. Time to impress our new American overlords Kevin!
