Unfullfilled potential

…..not sure if Michael Branch has been mentioned, he looked to be going to the very top. His Dad signed for RS at the same time as me and he was a classy defender so I was chuffed when his lad came through at Everton. Unfortunately young Michael has had a few dark periods in his life post-football.

World-beaters to a man...before they ended up at Colchester United or some such God-forsaken backwater with only their potential to warm them on the cold winter nights as they watched Everton live on Sky losing 3-0 at Middlebrough.

It’s hard to say because some of what we would think of as potential will really just have been hype, so some of the names mentioned were probably never that good to begin with.

Barkley’s a difficult one, over 400 games at the top level, 30 odd England caps and still playing in the CL is a career most people would be happy with but I get the argument that he could have been better.
Chelsea wages, ask Broja.

Unfortunately like many of our young lads I don’t think he was particularly well managed , we often ended up throwing out young players on late on when we were losing . The lads getting little opportunity and plenty of pressure before we often slipped to a defeat . All of which is hardly conducive to career development.

James Vaughan, explosive pace, great strength and an eye for a goal, the lad could play, but early too brave for his own good, became injury prone. That's the only reason.
I remember a game at Blackburn, think Vaughny had only just returned from another injury setback, through ball 70/30 at least in Friedels favour,he went in full throttle with the full intention of winning the ball knowing he would get clattered, maybe too reckless for his own good but a big,big heart.

The first time I saw Dowell I thought he's a shoe in as a full England international. Technically he was fantastic.
