2023/24 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

True, but we ain’t signing Griezmann any time soon. What we can’t do is let him leave for free.
Exactly this.

The kid needs to show his appreciation for us helping him through his perma-crocked last few years and sign a new contract on the same terms in the summer, or we need to move him on for money to someone (don't know who).

If he could finish we'd get £100m for him.
It's not that he can't finish. It's that he scores in bunches, then has his finishing touch vanish for a while.

He causes enough problems and opens enough space for others to justify the selection even when he's off, in much the same way that Southgate would select Sterling under those conditions, but it does also mean that we need goal contributions from the wings, midfield and set pieces.

When we get those, we do well. When we don't, we struggle. We concede like a top half side and score like a bottom half one, which is why we would be midtable without the deduction. United has been luckier (whether by design or not), which is why they're in the European places.

That's kind of how that one goes when a side is goal-challenged but keeps goals out. Anything from fifth to fifteenth is sustainable, depending on how the goals and concessions distribute, and how well other sides translate their own into wins.

.
No, it really is that he can't finish. I think that goal a couple weeks ago was that first he scored outside the box. He's really really good at just about everything to be a top class striker except being even average at finishing. Give him Ollie Watkins finishing ability and he'd be a top 5 striker, even higher maybe. Dom really is poor at finishing.
