Hence the saying sucker - as the suck the life out of the plant - very common on roses, but any grafted or budded rootstock plant it can happen too - more common in roses as they are popular....
I have budded many a rose by the 1000s in nursery rows as an apprentice....,
I despise the thorns that went into my forearms off the wild rootstock.....the rootstock is more vigorous & has to be compatible with the budded or grafted rose ...

Hi - you have to be careful - May to July is the best time - soak it first - then prune the leaves only leaving the crown & transplant into a ready dug hole......well watered ready then spray the stem till signs of new growth ......

If you do it now from the top leaving the crown & and put the roots in a sack with only moist soil.& place the free in a 10 C dry - all winter & replant mid May if not weather arrives its 50\50 if the palm will survive doing it this way - if successful the crown will appear if you ever do this apart the air borne stem to the crown of your palm the main trunk & base as above ....plant in a semi shaded area .......

Remember that palms are tender & a hard winter will eventually kill them - so if you plant it it has to be sheltered......

Log chips are not like bark - in fact shredded wood remove Nitrogen & minerals from the soil - mainly used for pathways in your garden if that helps - the forestry commission usually use wood chips in their pathways as it a cheap source...... do not use them as a mulch etc as they are not like chipped bark which is far more advantageous ....

Thanks! I was wondering if you also had an idea what animal had made the tunnels in the photo if you can make them out. They are pretty big! There are moles around the allotment.

I read a small article which said that if you put ripe banana peel in a large jar, cover them with water, leave for a couple of weeks, you have liquid fertiliser for your toms. Anybody ever tried/heard of this, and if so, is it worth doing ?

I've got a ton of coffee grounds, can you put them in the compost bin ?

You can just soak it straight from the banana. Don't use it indoors though as it can attract fruit flies and the like.
