The temptation after a poor season is to try to change everything but what we really need to do is focus what budget we have on real quality to add to the first team and that’s probably stretching to 2 or 3 players max (depending on sales). The rest of the gaps fill with loans, maybe a free transfer or two or guys like Cannon or Mills stepping up.

Like you say if we aim for 5 or 6 permanent signings we are probably shopping in that 10-15m bracket that doesn’t get you guaranteed PL quality. Far better to get 2 or 3 of the required standard. For me that’s ideally a creative midfielder, a striker and either a full back or a winger (filling the one we don’t spend on with a loan / free).

There are some good players in that squad but they are dragged down by some poor ones, for me this summer if we stay up is more about evolution than revolution and about quality over quantity.

Look at the difference just having Calvert Lewin in the side makes, there has been so much upheaval, a small squad with that extra sprinkle of quality and topped up with loans or youth could be the way!

Its easier said than done though, i think that is what Leeds tried but spectacularly failed with!

Even so, of the players you mentioned Ndiaye is a long term target but Sheff Utd have been promoted so he wont be cheap. Elye Wahi the Montpellier striker would be a good signing in a Dyche setup and he is a good player. However I agree with @Nymzee in that we would be priced out of most of the other names you mention imo.

Yes, just adding 2 high quality young players to our first 11 could be the difference between another relegation battle or moving into midtable (or above).

Include Branthwaite as number 3 and thats enough changes before looking at the loan market.

To throw Brennan Johnson in the team in place of Iwobi could be huge. To also have a quality centre forward would not see us in this position again.

Covid 2 years were combined. So that would still be there along with last season and this one. In that sense we have a low spend last year and sales of Digne + Richarlison, James etc. This year Gordon and Kean.

Next summer we'd be looking good.

Seeing the difference a fit Calvert-Lewin has made, surely the priority is to get a viable alternative for the next time he isn't.

CF top priority and then a player who can play attacking midfield or right wing.

Yeah, the financial result for this season replaces the year we lost 120m, and with the sale of Gordon we are probably close to break even for this season so that completely changes the picture if so. We obviously await what gets done about the current P&S referral but from here on in the position improves dramatically.

This year’s financial result will create some wiggle room in next years financial results, which in turn will replace another heavy loss year. Basically unless we are transfer banned I think we will be able to spend some and stay within P&S rules due to the improving picture. There is also the issue of cash flow but hopefully new investment when it comes helps that too.

I think that’s the reason we were trying to do loans with obligation so much in the last two windows, because the ability to spend improves this summer.

Taking a risk with LB and the more attacking midfielders would be smart because worst case we have Myko/Godfrey & Iwobi/doucoure/gray/McMessi if they take time to bed/are toilet

Yeah, summer 24 is really where much of the recent issues are finally over, especially with more of our silly contracts expiring. But replacing 18/19 with this season should make a big difference from this summer- beating in mind the 18/19 loss doesn’t have any Covid deductions mitigating it.

Would love it, if only so the fans could actually watch him live but not a chance Dyche would sign him. Add to the that the kid would still want a decent wage and we really can waste a big salary on a player that plays 25% of his games - not given our current financial mess. If he would take a sensible wage or maybe a play as you pay deal then 100% yes!! he can be cover for McNeal lol

I don't think it's that unlikely tbh. Could easily see him signing a 1+1 option and considering he was just at Olympiakos I don't think his wages would be that high, especially for the quality we know he has. As for Dyche I think he'd actually like him, he does work hard even if he's not sprinting around everywhere. Considering we've had Iwobi on the wing for months being a passenger in 9 of every 10 games I'd absolutely replace him with James, in fact I'd consider you to be an utter lunatic if you didn't want to.

Think if he wants to come back to the PL we're the obvious option and we'd be mad to pass it up honestly. He pays for himself with marketability and all that alone, never mind the fact that he probably gets 10 assists in this team alone by himself still.
