Didn't stay up to watch last night due to an early start at work today, but I've watched the full game this afternoon (my recording, not the edited highlights).
Couple notable points:
Humphrey, Thuney & the rest of the Chiefs OL were fully in control of a lackluster Bengals pass rush. Whoever coaches the Kansas OL did a nice job of film review regarding Mike Hilton's zone blitzes, the protection picked him up every time. Kelce and Pacheco stood out in a subtle way: they both did very well chipping the Cincinnati DE's (Hubbard, Hendrickson, Ossai) on most of the passing plays.
Chiefs OL also did a good job of opening running lanes for Pacheco. The rookie running back has significantly outperformed his expected output this year - he was drafted in the 7th round, so wasn't expected to be elite... But behind THAT line, he's getting it done. The Bengals adjusted to compensate, bringing Vonn Bell into the box regularly, but that just left them short-handed in coverage. It was weird to see the Chiefs largely abandon the running game in the second quarter and only go back to it after Cincinnati made it 20-20 at the end of the third quarter.
Cincinnati's OL got absolutely murdered. Last week against the Bills they repeatedly pulled their offensive tackles to operate as lead blockers on running plays but the same tactic failed against the Chiefs because Volson, Karras and Scharping were getting shoved backwards every play by the Chiefs DTs. In pass pro they were even worse: Carman, Scharping and Adeniji all got beaten repeatedly in one-on-ones and you just can't operate a passing game in that scenario. This was what won the game for the Chiefs: total domination of the LOS. (Same reason the Eagles beat the 49ers)
The Chiefs deserved to win. It was astonishing that they were only ahead by 7 at halftime and I don't understand why they didn't just run the ball more in the second half and deny the Bengals the opportunity to try to get back into the game. The Chiefs spent the entire third quarter giving the ball back to Cincinnati at every opportunity, and Burrow put on a clinic to get the Bengals back into touching distance. At least we settled the question about who's the best QB: Burrow had no pass protection, no running game to lean on and the scoreboard made it clear he had to pass all the time, facing the strongest part of the Chiefs D. And he almost won the game. Mahomes on the other hand had an armchair ride behind a largely perfect pocket - I think he got pressured twice in the entire game, but still struggled to beat a Cincinnati team that couldn't stop the run or get any pass rush going.
Hope all the injured players heal up in time for the Superbowl - the ones who are ACTUALLY injured.
Chiefs MVP: Chris Jones, DT.
Bengals MVP: Joe Burrow, QB.
