Gutted that we're going into yet another calendar year with this utter waste of space amongst our ranks. His last good game was over half a decade ago - literally. It surely must be his final season with us given his contract is soon to be up. If he's got an ounce of professionalism he'll be negotiating a bosman free transfer in January.

He sums up the sentimentality that has been as much a part of our decline as financial mismanagement. It was quite clear for at least three years now that this lad had missed the boat. He simultaneously benefited and suffered from "local lad" syndrome which ensured he had both irrational support and irrational criticism as he developed...into much the same player he was four years ago.

If a player hasn't made the jump from occasional contributor to consistent performer within nine to twelve months - 18 at an absolute stretch - then it generally isn't going to happen. See Holgate and Godfrey. Same story there. But at Everton, we persist and refuse to read the writing on the wall. Until we get utterly ruthless with player development, we will continue to pack our squad out with Championship-standard reserves who star more on social media than they do on the pitch.
