Former Wigan utility man Paul Scharner has claimed he turned down the opportunity to join Everton.

Hamburg’s Austrian international was on loan at the DW Stadium last season and has revealed he was offered a three-year deal to move to Goodison Park following the Latics FA Cup triumph.

New Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has already added Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles to the his squad this summer.

If Scahrner had taken up the offer the contingent of Wigan old-boys at Everton next season would have been up to four, but the 33-year-old opted to stay and fight for his place at the Bundesliga club.

‘I could’ve earned twice as much in England. In May, after the FA Cup triumph with Wigan, Everton offered me a three-year deal,’ he claimed.

‘But at this point in time I had the announcement that in Hamburg everyone starts at zero.’

Scharner may yet be lining up alongside one Everton player next season, however, with Hamburg heavily linked with a move for Blues striker Nikica Jelavic.

Scharners always been a bit of a joker. I can't believe for 1 second that a below average 33 year old was offered a 3 year deal...

Delbert....the transfer thread man. It's been discussed there. It's a massive lie.
