Quality is great if you can afford it in every position like utd.
We can't, so expanding the squad to accomadate the resting of our top players is the only way to succeed in the Europa.

As a backup left back on a free I wouldn't be too bothered, he could do a job.

Ball would be able to work as a competent backup to Baines on the left, so Lescott could stay in the middle even if Baines need to rest a game or two. On a free it's definately worth a try, a 2+1 year contract perhaps?
