Scholes was atrocious defensively
Luckily for him he played in a Utd team that dominated most games and wasn't forced to do much defensive work
And he also had Keane behind him

This is why IMO he struggled for England as England managers played him in midfield expecting him to play like he did for Man Utd but not realising he would have to do a lot more defending which he couldnt handle at that level especially when England played top teams

He cost England a number of goals from his poor defensive play

He should have played number 10 for England

Gerrard was more than adequate from a defensive perspective. Lampard and Toure could do both, they were just more proficient at one than the other. The best central midfielders can do both, if you can only do one and not the other then yes, you are limited in your central midfield abilities.

This is particularly the case from a defending point of view, as if you stand off, fail to make a challenge and allow the opposition to bypass you, then the team will be punished and you aren't doing your job as a central midfielder. This is what is happening with Barkley right now, he is best placed as a number 10, and he would be overcome in central midfield.
