Everton deserved their victory over the Magpies at St James’ Park but the flattering scoreline highlighted the growing problem of loan players in today’s Premier League.

Newcastle United are no stranger to the loan market and it’s no secret we struggle to convert chances, as we did in the Everton loss, without leading goal scorer and short-term striker Loic Remy from QPR on the pitch.

The Toon also brought in Luuk De Jong in January to reinforce the forward line, although based on the last night’s showing, it’s unlikely we’ll be following up interest in the Dutchman long-term.

Going into the game the two sides looked closely matched but by the final whistle it was clear there was a huge gulf in quality. The pace and skill of Gerard Deulofeu caused problems for Yoan Gouffran and Paul Dummett down the left-flank all night. The power of Romelu Lukaku bullied the Toon’s beleaguered defence from the first whistle.

In the middle, England international Gareth Barry picked out the forward thinking Ross Barkley and the Everton attack time and time again. On-loan Chelsea striker, Lukaku is one of this season’s stand out strikers and has found the net 12 times with a record of a goal every other game.

Deulofeu, on-loan from Barcelona no less, played a part in all three goals and was a constant threat against the Toon. Barry, on-loan from Manchester City, was a stablising presence in the Everton centre-midfield and arguably allowed the marauding Barkley the freedom to destroy the Magpies’ defence in the
manner he did for the opening goal.

A third of Everton’s starting line-up were on-loan players from the world’s elite clubs and their whole team is built around them.

The victory wasn’t exclusively down to these three starters but they all played a huge part in the win and almost certainly made the difference on the night.

Take nothing away from Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard is proving to be more than capable of filling David Moyes shoes at Goodison Park – and was irritatingly endearing in the way he praised the Toon players for their efforts in Alan Pardew’s enforced absence before kick-off.

But without Lukaku, a world-class striker who would be beyond Everton financially if they were to attempt a full transfer from Chelsea, as well as Deulofeu and Barry, the Toffees wouldn’t be anywhere near a Champions League spot.

Other clubs have players on loan, Newcastle included, but none have had greater impact than at Everton.

The Football Association need to address the Premier League loan system to stop it having an adverse affect on the table.

Saw this a few days ago. Hes taking the piss he is. They then went and lost 4-0 to southampton

Soooo...

Paying obscene amounts of Arab, Russian, American money to horde players on the bench/reserves =ok
Paying a fee for use of same players & paying their wages so that they can play competitive football = out of order.

Hmmm...

I'm not usually a big fan of his articles, but the lad who writes the Everton articles for Metro, Royal Blue Mersey wrote a decent comeback

I’ve heard some excuses for a team’s defeat in my time but this one by a Newcastle fan is quite extraordinary.

There can be no argument that Everton deserved to win at St James’ Park on Tuesday. It is the kind of defeat we have been on the wrong end of on numerous occasions this season and sometimes as a fan you have to accept your team were beaten by the better side, pure and simple.

However, instead of acknowledging that fact, this Newcastle fan claims we should be reported to the FA because we had three loan players in our side.

No, seriously, look: ‘A third of Everton’s starting line-up were on-loan players from the world’s elite clubs and their whole team is built around them…. The Football Association need to address the Premier League loan system to stop it having an adverse affect on the table.’

Aside from the fact that three players out of 11 does not constitute a third, it’s difficult to know where to start in discrediting this argument.

For starters, there is nothing illegal about what Everton have done this season and they operate in the same rules as Newcastle and every other football club do.

Newcastle fans would do well to address their own club’s problems before casting aspersions on one of their rivals

The fact the three players Everton have signed on loan this season – Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and Gerard Deulofeu– have been such a success is down to Roberto Martinez playing the market perfectly rather than some underhand conspiracy.

It’s not our fault that Luuk De Jong has yet to score in eight appearances since joining Newcastle On-loan from Borussia Monchengladbach. Or that Loic Remy, playing for Newcastle on-loan from QPR, is out injured.

I guess you should be only allowed to loan players if they are rubbish?

I would love Everton to sign the likes of Lukaku on permanent deals but the truth is we have to live within our means.

That isn’t to say we don’t have ambition, which explains why Martinez has looked to use the loan market to his advantage in order to improve the side. It has reaped benefits this season with the club now in within an outside chance of a top four place.

Should Everton finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League they may then be able to fund big money players like Lukaku.

Isn’t that kind of self-sufficiency more palatable than another billionaire owner swanning in and buying success?

If Newcastle fans want to complain about anything it would be the hoarding of players by some of the richer sides in the division. That clearly doesn’t include Everton, who shouldn’t be blamed for making the best of the situation they find themselves in.

That’s something Newcastle clearly aren’t doing as their season drifts to a rather non-descript conclusion.

Newcastle fans would do well to address their own club’s problems before casting aspersions on one of their rivals – don’t forget this is a side whose manager is currently serving a ban for head-butting a player during a game.

They could also do with learning to accept defeat from time to time, instead of lashing out at their opponents with ill-conceived arguments laced with jealousy and bitterness fuelled by their own team’s inadequacies.

Sour grapes about one side signing terrible loan players compared to another signing effective ones. The only difference is the effectiveness. The same bitterness was commented on by Liverpool fans earlier in the season.

It's utter nonsense, nothing to see here.

On the subject of incredibly bitter newspaper articles, has anyone seen David James' latest bitter ramblings in the Guardian? It's ostensibly a Moyes piece, but it reads like an anti-Everton piece. Bad whopper is James.

He's upset because Newcastle got ruined 3-0.

What I don't understand is that Newcastle have two players on loan. We've got three. One more player warrants that reaction?

Also:

A third of Everton’s starting line-up were on-loan players from the world’s elite clubs and their whole team is built around them.

Stick to writing about clubs you know about. The team isn't built around them. Muppet.

Massively a case of sour grapes. He sounds like a petulant child!

Check out the comments below on the site. They sum up the just how bad the article is.

Just a pity Hadrian didnt build his wall a bit further down the country and let the fat wastes of space become a massive club north of the border
