Khalekan

Player Valuation: £80m
I heard the commentator say this evening that they have used a very small squad this season.....around sixteen players.

I don't think they have a lot of money to spend, though I don't know for certain.

Either way, be it with a small squad possibly assembled relatively cheaply or not, they are in the CL Final and are in pole position as La Liga enters its final stages.

To get where they are right now they had to overcome two massively wealthy rivals, their near neighbours in particular splashed out around £100 million on one player this season.

This appears to turn on its head what has become the received wisdom in this country....that splashing out megabucks and hording players to make the squad massive is the only way to go.

I wonder if Athletico Madrid can provide a blueprint for EFC going forward.

Profit/loss from this season:

Atlético Madrid:
+43,600,000
FC Barcelona: -42,000,000
Real Madrid:
-49,000,000

nuff sed

Atletico.

Pants off.

Atlético mate.

They definitely give us hope. Although I believe there are only two clubs who outspend them (maybe 3, not sure about Sevilla?), the difference is massive, and on paper they have no right to not only have kept up with them for the whole season, but to actually look like doing a double. The arrival of Simeone single handedly transformed the mentality and attitude of the club.

Obviously all these things remind us of Martinez and Everton, although we have to compete with more clubs than they do. I'm not sure about their financial situation but they seem to operate in a similar fashion to ourselves there as well, finding bargains (whether cheap South Americans or established players being underused at bigger/similar sized clubs) - and selling them for a profit. They do seem to spend big from time to time though (Falcao comes to mind), which obviously we don't do much...

Yes, that's what I was thinking.

Manchester City: -92.000.000 £
Chelsea: -45.000.000 £
Arsenal: -34.000.000 £
Liverpool: -21.500.000 £
Everton: +12.500.000 £

Well i'll sleep better tonight.

I usually copy and paste from wikipedia for thread names, tbh. Sorry.

They've been outstanding Atletico, Simeone reminds me of a young Ancellotti in the way his teams can play.

what they have achieved have came from winning the europa league 2 years in a row and making the step up.

That is how they have moved forward and been able to make the step up. Nothing to do with money or coaching, if they weren't being succesful in europe they would have had to sell players wanting to move to bigger and better things.

that and Simeone seems to be a good manager there to build such a good side.

So the coaching of the players has nothing to do with them being a good side?

I said and in the second paragraph lol i did mention that.

But without europe success they would be, well basically us and not have gone anywhere

I will claim that I was a positive influence on them having attended their game vs Milan.
