Would you offer Phil Neville a one year contract in January?

i was sick of neville 5years ago and hes got worse since then, hes only had a few decent games recently. i cant see what he brings to EFC on the pitch so if he is good in the dressing room then leave him there so he can dye his hair more or something. we need a captain with a bit of fire not a mild mannered janitor like super-phil

Not sure how such a short post can get me to disagree with so many parts of it. Anyway, each Evertonian to their own.

Player / Coach role for me.

Is it a regular thing for players to get reduced wages on their contracts as they get older?

Please enlighten me, for this "Yeah i'd take him back but tell him he'll be on reduced wages" doesn't seem to be realistic, especially for a club captain...I can't see Gerrard/Terry/Lampard et al being happy with 30% of their pay packet flying off somewhere.

Can we afford to replace him?

There. If Moyes and Kenwright can answer that question in January with a yes, then the answer to the question is no. Otherwise, it's 12 more months of this:

That's because the players you mentioned are key players for their clubs and national team. Of course players who are performing well and leading their sides on the pitch are not going to accept wage cuts. The point is that as a player's influence and on-the-field contribution wane towards the end of their career, in order to extend their contract at the club (rather than being released on a free) they might accept a lower wage which reflects their smaller contribution.

Whether Neville is a great leader or not, we'll have to replace him at some point. The same arguments that are being made now could be made when he's 50 years old as well.

How is this poll that close???

He's 35 years old, a footballing liability AND he's on £50k a week!

Unless he reduced his wages to £10k a week and took a non-playing role there is no way on earth I want him around the club a moment longer than he has to be contractually (thanks to the stupid, stupid decision to give him that contract two years ago - a true "contract for one of the lads" that was; a £50k a week contract to a 33 year old - that doesn't happen anywhere else, especially when you're talking about a player who has been past it for a good five years).

He can cover 3 positions in our small squad.

We'll definitely give him another year, I just hope it comes with reduced playing time and wages.

It's almost like people disagree with you, WTF Tubes???

Yeah why not, I like the guy. Seems to be the scapegoat a lot when he's not actually that terrible imo. Sometimes actually being very good. We do need to get better but he's an excellent utility player and a great leader. Can't say he's single handedly lost or won us games. He's just there and he does a job. Sign him up moylez.

I don't mind people disagreeing with me obviously, I'm just confused as to why. I've read through the thread and nobody has given a reason for keeping Neville that has made me think "at least they sort of have a point there."

Who would play right back if Hibbert got injured?
