A teen sparked a police probe after claiming he was stabbed in the face by thugs - when he had actually just fallen into a CANAL.

The 19-year-old was so embarrassed at his botched attempt to jump the canal he made up the stabbing story to tell his family.

He told detectives a group of hooded thugs stabbed him in the chin with a 10-inch knife on the towpath in Dudley, West Mids.

Officers investigated a lead that the men were linked to threatening text messages sent to the teen's step-dad.

They carried out a high-tech examination of the step-dad's phone - only to discover video of the bungled canal leap.

In the footage the man runs at the narrow canal but misjudges his jump and slams into the concrete edge before plunging into the water.

The video ends with him rolling around on the grass in agony as his step-dad continues to film.

West Midlands Police released the hilarious clip on their YouTube page today.

Detective Sergeant Jim Munro said: "We found a video on the phone which showed our supposed 'victim' attempting to jump across the canal.

"That's when we knew he'd actually made the whole thing up and that even his step-father was in on the conspiracy.

"Both were arrested for perverting the course of justice and immediately admitted that it was all fabrication."

The idiotic teenager, who was fined £80 for wasting police, was not named by the force.

Agreed, he had the opportunity to come out of it with his dignity. But he decided to focus on the pain, not the glory.
