Why can't we win the league

Me coming on as a late sub to score the winner for us in the champions league final is a possibility mate, but I'm very aware it won't happen. I'd still say this is more probable than us winning the league. We haven't even played ten games yet, or any of the big hitters away from home.

It's time to wise up.

Lack of depth and defence looks vulnerable a bit too often.

Plus there's sides a fair bit better than ourselves in the League.

Just simply pointing out we have every reason to feel good. So I do. There's a strong vein of pessimism that runs deep on our fanbase, and I'm not saying there isn't reason for that, but the past has no bearing on the present or the future. How many dismissed our start in '04 or Newcastle's start last year? None of knows if we have the staying power to stay near the top or not. Winning the league is incredibly hard. But why not? Why can't this year be different? If the players and coaches actually believe we can do it, then they'll play like it.

The table really never lies. We're boss right now. If we continue being boss, there aren't any teams in the league that will be happy to see our name pop up on the fixture list, I can tell you that.

Saying we're not going to win the league against the likes of City and Chelsea is not pessimism !

We should just focus on the here and now, take it one game at a time and leave the '60 points and we've won the league' talk to the RS. Just look at Roberto Mancini, he said all season long that City would take the games as they came and not count their chickens, and it paid off.

Me either mate, but we have to be realistic. It's one of the main things that separates us from the RS supporters.

Id do naked laps round my house to celebrate a title win, I'm old but not old enough to really comprehend our last league win, but it's Everton mate. If we needed a point at home on the last day of the season, against the worst team in the league to win it, I'd still expect us to loose.

I just don't want to let myself get too carried away.

“Id do naked laps round my house to celebrate a title win“
--every win for me. Poor neighbours ;)

“...not old enough to really comprehend our last league win“
--let's hope this changes sometime mate, but our last titles didn't come from a squad of world-beaters on paper, except in retrospect. Who rated Reid/Stevens/Sheedy/Southall when they joined? To some extent I think we need to also get over the 90's pessimism too.

This has to change eh? :)

You know what? Why not? Granted it would be one of the greatest achievements in our entire history if we pulled it off but say we don't pick up too many injuries and those we do are only minor knocks, our players keep their form up throughout the season, we sure to be arsed against clubs that are below us, our fringe players push the first XI all the way, our youth come good at the same time and we make one or two quality signings in January to strengthen the squad; winning the league isn't completely out of the question. While it lasts I say enjoy getting caught up in the moment, who knows when we'll have a team like this again and who cares what the kopites think? We've got a decent shout for once and are only really saying it in jest.

I admire your optimism spud. I genuinely hope I'm eating humble pie whilst stripping my knick knacks off at the end of the season.

You're probably right dude, but if the team cultivates that 'special feeling' on a good run of form, and the manager fosters it appropriately, who knows? As a junior, wearing the itchy nylon kits of the late '70's/early 80's, I never dreamed of the fleece lined luxury that was to come :)

And the teams above us durin that time we've played three times, winning two and drawing the other. Of course we can fcking win it

The odds are stacked against us but we can never say never. Don't know what could happen in a few weeks time - clubs may go go broke, owners leave and we might just be dead lucky with injuries. Nothing is set in stone.

But for now going enjoy being second in the league for now haha.

Pretty sure Citeh will run away with this one at some point. Don't think there's a squad in the league near them.
