Why can't we win the league

Excellent question by the OP.

It would be the greatest shot in the arm for english football if a club like us, Villa, Newcastle, Sunderland or any of the non-fancied boys won it, because it would give hope to everyone.

Obviously love it if it was us and in times past a start like ours would raise genuine hope but the EPL record has killed such thinking. It's become a self fulfilling prophecy only those from a certain monied group can win it, dreadful really.

It's not though is it mate? I very much doubt any of us genuinely believes we can win the league from here, it's just nice to have a bit of boundless optimism about the place with a little justification. It's not like players are talking up our chances or anything. Most of us are pragmatic about where we are rather than the general consensus being world domination.

We're second in the table. I don't think expecting us to continue our form is kopite behavior. There's a difference between expecting success based on the name on the front of the jersey, and expecting your team to perform the way it's capable of performing to it's capability.

Just to put this into perspective, West Brom were today just minutes from being level on points with us, and may have finished the day in 3rd.

In short, it's six games in. Behave yourself. If we are in or around the top four at Christmas (almost three full months away) then the idea of European Football next season might bear some weight.

Brenda aint really doing it for your team is he lad??

Nevermind lad, next year.

We probably don't have the squad depth to challenge all season long for the title, but if we stay relatively injury free, as Moyes says,if we're still up there come april, why not?

Just come across this article, and although its about qualifying for the Champions League as opposed to winning the title, it's basically asking the same question.

Everton should be encouraged in their ambitions. The acceptance of the status quo is thoroughly depressing and too many have been hoodwinked into believing that it must always be this way: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, latterly Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, for ever and ever. Amen.

Very true. Some people confuse negativity with objectivity.

Who cares if someone is carried away with us being second in October. I'd rather fans being optimistic about our league position than fuming about not having a win on the board.

It's not kopite behaviour, kopite behaviour is thinking you innately deserve to be winning and are generally more important/relevant than everyone else.

I got a reply from Ian Darke on Twitter yesterday when I asked him about our chances. He said our squad was thin but if the injury bug doesn't bite we'll have a big season. Big season: League Champions? Champions League spot? Europe? It's obvious we have a thin squad but with the eventual loan/transfer of Donovan in January, we just might be able to make a push.

We don't have the players or the mentality that would enable us to do so. We especially struggle away from home against other sides in the top 10. European football is definitely on the cards though, should we keep most of our key players fit.
