Why are the Welsh people so strange?

Used to do Wrexham open air market on a Monday - Always busy and found the folks in general to be alright. There was always some urchin hanging around looking to 'mind' this or that for you, one in particular looked like he could have played 'dueling banjo's' and I swear I only ever heard him say 2 words - 'Nah' and 'Bollix". That was it really.
Have a sister who was born there, pregnant mum evacuated during the war.
Always enjoyed 'holidays' with my mates in various Welsh resorts as a teenager - nice place then.
Much of Wales is fantastic. We all go there because of that. Fishing on the Vyrnwy and Severn in Wales as a kid, thanks to much effort from my mum and dad with camping weekends, day trips and holidays, shaped my outlook. I have never lived in a city since exiting from my parents.

I thought the other day that Welsh people must have been the models for the Hobbits. Even the names and words are very Welsh. Does anyone know if Tolkien used them?
