Who's the cleverest of them all..?

Trevor Brooking used to get ribbed by teammates because he liked to quietly do crosswords on the bus to away fixtures, instead of joining in the card games.

Graham le Saux got outright abuse from other players, because he read The Guardian instead of the usual cerebral redtop, preferred to visit cultural venues rather than the bookies, and of course things came to a head when that giant of Mensa, Fowler, decided to join the mob...

For Le Saux, however, the more his profile developed, the louder the taunts became. The apex arrived in the incident with Fowler when Chelsea hosted Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in 1999. The Liverpool striker had fouled Le Saux and displayed complete contempt for his fellow professional when the defender was lining up to take the free-kick. Making that schoolyard gesture, Fowler clasped his hands to his buttocks and repeatedly shouted: “Come on and give me one up the arse.”
