We have improved as a team and can trouble the big team, compared to the team DM put out. Teams let us have the ball as they know we do not hurt them with the possession we have. We lost to RS and we had 61% possession at Anfield. 53% at Chelsea and lost, 54% at Spurs and lost, 56% at Arsenal and drew.

I haven't taken newcastle seriously in the race for europe all season, i'm not going to start now. they hadn't scored since boxing day until two weeks back
 

Newcastle is our next away game, like.

Big game that, we really need to start picking up points on the road again and they're actually half decent. A win there would be a huge boost for us.

Spurs are 5 points ahead of us but we have two games in hand and a much better goal difference. Their manager was pretty much sobbing whilst laying into his players after a drubbing by Chelsea and looks like he has lost the support of both his chairman and fans.

Yet you seem to think it is going to take something major for us to overtake spurs but only a run of form for Newcastle to make up a larger amount of points in less games.

Not saying its not going to happen - been an everton supporter too many years - but surely on the facts alone you would have to say its more likely we'll overtake Spurs than Newcastle catch us?

I'm in total agreement with legs of Lineker on this one. I do however suspect that our trip up to St James will not be very fruitful ...(albeit just 'gut feel' to substantiate that suspicion...Southampton also looms difficult)

I generally go into most away games with a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach and don't think any away game is a given - Newcastle, Southhampton and Hull away all look especially tricky (Sod's law says Jella is bound to score against us). It is also unlikely we will manage only 1 loss at home all season.

It is just that I look at the teams closest to us - Man Utd, Spurs and Newcastle - and they seem to have so many off field problems in addition to the usual issues of injuries/tactics/mistakes that I really feel that 5th is possible as long as we play anywhere near how we have for most of the season. Imo our squad has more of a team spirit about it than any of those three and that might just make the difference.

Think the gap to 4th is just too large to overcome but let see where we are at the end of March.

Neat and tidy aesthetically may look good, but it doesn't get results against better quality opponents. We have have one of the lowest totals for chances created through the middle in the league...and yet we play a system that is meant to create through the middle. We would do..if we had the players to do it (Hazard, Oscar etc.). The three goals against the RS were direct/from crosses, first was a punt thrown into the mixer which fell to Mirallas, and the other two from wide left which Lukaku got on the end of....likewise the only goal in the last league game was from a Baines cross (first assist this season). Baines who was by far our most productive player has suffered in playing the current system.

Agree with pretty much all of that. It seems as if we get into the channels and they then remember that Martinez doesn't like crosses into the box and then we struggle. I'd have thought that Lukaku attacking Baines' deliveries would have been a profitable area for us.

Arsenal will be without Ozil and Wilshere for a few weeks now. Spurs, Chelsea, City and us to play in their next 6 too. Could we haul them back in? If they draw at the Lane and we win our next 2 we could close within six points of them.

I can see one of Liverpool or Arsenal faltering in the closing stages giving us a chance to close the gap, but we've left ourselves with absolutely no room to manoeuvre given the points we've dropped since Christmas. Optimistically I can see us finishing around 6 points off that 4th spot.

Well don't discard your hope. Yes, it is improbable, but lofty ambition is rarely consummated without some good fortune lending hand. We might be due some.

WE'RE EVERTON AREN'T WE!!!
 
Fourth is a possibility but let's beat Cardiff first then see where we are after.

I can't see Newcastle catching us and if they do and we finish Eighth RM should be sacked
