If memory serves me correctly, Baines has never had to chase the ball when we get a penalty, as everyone already knew he was going to take it and would just give the ball to him. So if you think he didn't want to take the one v WBA, why was he waiting on the penalty spot for someone to pass him the ball?

And as I said before, the penalty at Old Trafford isn't the first one he's missed for us...

It may not have been the first one he missed for us (when was the other occasion BTW).....but up until Sunderland it was the worst penalty I had ever seen him hit.

Those two pennos support the view he had lost confidence and had ruled himself out from penalty duties IMO.

Now.....your recollection of events on the night of the Baggies fiasco is different from mine.

Lukaku was the first to remonstrate with Mirallas.....then Naisy went bananas.

Far from "waiting on the penalty spot" Baines only went over there when Mirallas marched up with the ball.

And as was well aired here at the time, Baines never made much of an attempt to take the ball off've Mirallas in order to have a go himself.

In fact, some of our friends were calling him all sorts for not giving Mirallas a Kirkby kiss and taking the ball from him.

The more we see with pennos since Baggies and the more I think about it now, Baines had no intention of taking the penalty that night.

This. Baines needs to grow a pair, he's a senior player and he's frightened to take any responsibility for anything. He's as spineless as Jagielka, and they are our captain and vice captain, worryingly
I've been very disappointed in Baines. Leaving aside his drop in performance levels, I expect him to act like a senior pro. His attitude looks miles off to me; that EL ITV appearance was very poor and hinted at a player who can get a gob on and sulk.

I personally think Baines thought he was going to take the penalty, and Lukaku and Naismith remonstrated with Mirallas because they knew he shouldn't be taking it. The reason Baines didn't remonstrate either, is because he's too soft and doesn't like confrontation.

You may very well be right, and I may be wrong, and whoever is correct is irrelevant anyway. But why would Martinez publicly state Baines was our penalty taker and would be taking the next one, if this wasn't the case?

This also doesn't explain why he didn't take Saturday's either.

His first penalty miss for us was a few years ago (2011?) in the League Cup at Goodison, against Chelsea. Sturridge scored for them and we lost 1-0 in extra time. I also remember Royston Drenthe getting a red card.

Cech saved Baines' penalty at the Gwladys Street end. Can't remember if this was at 0-0 or 0-1, but it certainly contributed to us getting knocked out. Prior to this, he'd been mustard and scored loads, so it was a real surprise to see him not convert it.

Just checked. We got beat 2-1 in October 2011, League Cup 4th round. We were getting beat 1-0 when Baines had his penalty saved by Cech in the 61st minute, but Saha equalised after 83 mins to take the tie into extra time. Sturridge scored the winner for them after 116 mins. What I forgot is that Anelka also put a penalty wide for them after 16 mins when the score was 0-0.

Is that the night Drenthe got himself sent off when we were in the ascendancy?

If it’s true that Baines doesn’t want to take penalties anymore, it makes sense to me that we don’t have a designated second penalty taker because who would you chose?
- You couldn't exactly pick Mirallas cause well I can't imagine the fume if he missed..
- If Barkley has been low on confidence for a while he probably wouldn’t have been the right choice either.
- And some other suggestions like Barry and Stones, maybe they just don’t want to take them?

So it makes sense to me to leave it open to whoever feels up to taking it. (although it would be nice if they decided this before each match so it doesn’t look silly)

Personally I voted for Lukaku cause I think he’s done well so far and I've been disappointed that Baines never stepped up.
Now you could say Baines is the better penalty taker as he’s scored 14/15 but how do we know Romelu (or someone else) won’t do the same if they get the opportunity? Not sure why some are doubting Romelu’s penalties anyway, he has a good record only missing two so far and scoring 4/4 for us. Only the one against Kiev wasn’t the best but it went in and he said himself that he was feeling too confident. His next one was better.

Out with the old and in with the new. We need a fresh start at the club and to flush away all the represents and supports the last 20 years of stagnation at the club.

Tick tock old bean.

You're like the crocodile in Peter Pan...you've been tick tocking since Blue Kipper was in its infancy.:)

No.

I am suggesting that it never mattered "most" for Chelsea.

I am suggesting that of all the Cup finals Chelsea have played in and lost since the turn of the century this loss would have hurt the least.

It is the F.A. Charity Shield on tour.

It shouldn't even be listed in a club's honours list.

Of maybe you think Moyes holding aloft the Shield at Wembley is a major feather in his cap and has broken his trophy winning duck :p
I'm not suggesting it was a more important competition for them than the champions league. But the bottom line is he failed to score when the pressure was on, and I haven't been that convinced by the penalties he's taken for us so far either.

Baines had miss two penalties for us, not one.

Plus he's scored all he's taken in penalty shoot outs, which is another 3-4 that won't be included in his tally either

He missed one in the shoot out against Chelsea in FA Cup 4th round replay in 2011.

Arteta also had penalties taken off him and missed while he had similar record to Baines. Twice by Yakubu and once by Saha none of them were scored.

What pressure?

It was a piggin' friendly in all but name.

There was more pressure on him taking the penno against the Barcodes.

Yeah forgot about Baines missing one in that Chelsea shout-out, after scoring that cracking free kick.

Was that penalty saved, or did he miss the target?

And on Arteta, what did his record end up as for us? I remember him missing at least a couple, but he was fairly reliable for us and Arsenal too
