Which managers have progressed us?

He did a Slot

Stuck with the Moyes defence but added a little bit of quality up front (Lukaku and Del) but in the 2nd season he implemented his philosophy and it went sideways.

Couldn’t adapt or unwilling too but after the first season it was bad
The best players in his first season were Lukaku, Barry and McCarthy, add in Deulofeu and Stones and Barkley, these were all players he signed or brought properly into the first team.

His biggest mistake/problem was that he persisted with Howard for too long and couldn't replace McCarthy when he got injured. Not saying McCarthy was Zidane or anything but he was vital to how we played, enabling the full backs to bomb on.

The question was who progressed us? Not which managers had a good spell.

"For me, we haven't progressed, have we? When the League started we were one of the "big 5" pushing for the PL. Since then, we've been in as many relegation scraps as we have European races.

Progress is improving - and for me, the only way we will improve is by regularly qualifying for Europe, winning an occasional trophy. Until then, we're treading water."

Hope that answers your question, as I initially said.

Moyes in his first spell for a period, it was obvious it wasnt sustainable or they could push on further for champions league or dare I say league titles because of the set up of the club itself. He himself calls his first time in charge , successful.

The “best of the rest” “punching above our weight” “be careful what you for” etc.

As much as he did alright I found his first time a bit demeaning to the club itself, how it was portrayed as some underdog and they were all happy to go along with it.
That was Kenwright's doing, though. Moyes did a wondrous job for him and he propagandised it as us punching above our weight. The thing is, we were punching above our weight - but only because Kenwright shrunk us from a giant heavyweight to a bantamweight through financial anaemia.

Imagine that Moyes team with Moyes managing it and Lukaku. We’d probably have gotten top four. Fellaini was a colossus.

He left Martinez with players who needed to be coached how to pass the ball to each other along the deck.

...something we can see in the last game against Brentford he still hasn't mastered as a coach.

The only reason we're not playing hoofball again this time around under Moyes is because we have a number of players who can carry the ball distances. Otherwise that ball would be coming down with snow on it.
I’ve read some utter lies in my time, but this takes the cake. The football in Moyes last season was excellent, and it had been a long, calculated build to make the squad competitive with little funds.

Martinez squandered all the momentum and took the club back years.

The only managers who progressed us were

Joe Royle - scrappy, but good players who left all on field

David Moyes - 2002-2008. Although, id argue the year we lost to Fiorentina was the defining moment of his tenure, built the best squad of my lifetime and didnt have confidence to go for it.

Roberto Martinez - 1st season. As above he inherited Moyes Squad and attacked and we bottled top 4. After that he lost the defensive quality and we folded.

Honourable mentions

Marco Silva - had the right ideas, dont think he ever recovered from Anfield where Pickford collapsed. Still think hes got a big job in him.

Ancelotti. Took lazy players and had them believing, a polished turd is still a turd though and the second half was disgraceful.

This is the right level of negativity. I couldn't say Martinez progressed us. Years 2 and 3 were when his ideas took root, his signings took root and it became a nightmare.

I'd probably say Silva progressed us, barely, because for the most part he brought in useful players and we were in a much better spot than where it was left by Koeman/Sam. I will always believe his sacking was premature and lacking in foresight. The performances were not as bad as the results and we would have recovered under him. I don't really see him as a top manager but the correct thing to do would have been to give him the rest of that year and then reassessed.

Not sure it did mate. You'll find my posts on here from the time saying not to pay the money because we weren't going down nor achieving anything that season with them. We also knew Allardyce was being legged for Silva in the summer.
It's difficult to put it into real perspective but lose at Stoke where Tosun got a brace and lose at Spurs where they both scored to get a point and the season might have looked very different. Bit like the importance of the Niasse double in the Bournemouth game, lose that one and we could have gone on to lose a couple more on the bounce. Very fine lines in the Prem as West Ham found out last night.

We'll never know - you ref the Stoke game but we were top half then.

As I say, I recall posting on here in Jan saying no point making them signings as we weren't going down, nor achieving Europe. I think they saddled us with long term problems that become indicative of a mess under Moshiri.

Nervous disposition or not, I just never felt we were going down that season and I knew Silva was coming in that summer. We were top half, we finished 8th. I think it would be like saying we need to sign players now to ensure we didn't go down, and in years to come saying well, small margins - who knows?!

Not sure on comparisons to West Ham - they're 14 points from 21. We were 15 from 20 and 19th when Dyche come in - that's bang relegation territory. I don't think we were ever there under Allardyce - just like I don't think we are now.

I always have the feeling top half or not we have it in our power to go 6-8 games without a win. I just highlighted those three players as overall failures that came up with point winning goals at times when we could easily have gone into free fall. Madar stands out as a failure who scored one vital goal in a season when we missed the drop by the skin of our teeth,so probably paid his fee and wages all in one game.
