From the looks of it thats exactly what happens. Functionally 7th place goes to EL2 now, instead of EL. Of course they say its 6th, with the 5th and cup winner(in seasons where its not a top 6 club) going to EL. Dilutes 7th and makes finishing in the top 5-6 that much more important, and difficult.

From a trophy perspective that Europa League 2 would give us a massive chance of winning a pot.

This squad is not good enough to qualify for Europe. It would be a miracle if we did.
It's not a well balanced group of players, and we're blighted by both injuries and fragile confidence.
And also, every time we do string a couple of results together, both players and fans seem to get carried away. We start looking up the table and fantasising about what might be possible - only to be rudely awakened by a performance/result which reminds us why we're so far down in the first place.

This is a transition year - we should probably just settle for around 10th and move on.

The issue is results like that are massively damaging to both fans and the players. Confidence will take a massive hit now.

All the teams around us are inconsistent, we just seem to be more inconsistent than them.

That difficult run of fixtures will be grim for us. Arsenal and Chelsea away are horrible games, Liverpool at home isn´t much better. The United match is the only game you can realistically see us getting 3 points in. That run will probably cut us adrift enough to rule out any late charge for Europe.
