When Did The Rot Set In?

I think it all started towards the end of Bobbys reign, had he been sacked after the derby, put Joe Doyle in for United we could of won, got a trophy. Instead Moshiri pointlessly kept Martinez, backed him then sacked him. Then we brought in Koemann which wasn't a long term solution to our problems, add to that the stupid DOF model, which has been our main problem, it's why we have ended up with a mish mash of players. The arrogance of our club, with regards to a lack of a replacement for Lukaku has cost us. Quite simply if you don't score, nor do you create enough chances, you get relegated. Buy a lad from Ukraine who's crap, who fails to support our attackers and can't defend and this is were you end up.

Thatcherism, the permissive society, advent of rock and roll?
From an Everton perspective, what was the moment when the tide turned and things started going backwards?
For me,the pivotal moment was the first home game in Martinez’s second season when we were walloped at home by Chelsea. Everything seemed rosy up to that point. We entered the season on a wave of optimism after t performing so well the previous season . Then bang! Teams sussed us out, watching us pass, pass, pass in our own half.
Since then it’s been one way to the grave.

Koeman. The man i ranted about us hiring from day 1.

Wasted a fortune.

Ladies and gents, hysel was 40 years ago. We can't blame that it didn't stop other clubs and it takes about 3 years to build a progressive team.

The rot started when Johnson arrived and then accelerated when kenwright joined. We then fell of a cliff when moshri was brought in by kenwright.

When the club meekly accepted the European ban in 1985 for a crime that had absolutely nothing to do with us whatsoever.

Could you imagine Manchester City accepting a ban from next season's Champions League for something that did not involve them? There would be court cases left, right, and centre.

Instead, Carter and Co caved in and abandoned their duty to protect the club's interests.

Yeah, we won another league 2 years later, but the seeds were planted: not so much of decline, but of a culture that deferred to others, accepted "our lot", and, most importantly, "knew our place."
Spot on that mate, very well put.

It can years to change a culture and you need the willingness to want to change it.

We ultimately ended up being led by Kenwright after Marsh and Johnson which says it all.

True, but I think it's a general malaise and lack of willingness to move forward from Johnson onwards which meant we have ended up with kenwright and moshri.

In hindsight what a terrible decision it for kenwright to get involved. He's neither and clever business man, strategist or a football brain.

Spot on! We have never had the correct commercial people in place to ride the financial doping wave. Others have taken the lions share away and its almost impossible to break into the top 6 revenue generators now. Especially as they hold all the power.

Brands was trying to steer a cruise ship that was taking on water with a Captain (Chairman) who wanted more passengers of retirement age, a firstmate (Bill) who is delusional and thinks the ship is worldclass, Multiple Navs officers speaking different languages (Managers) , and a team of engineers who are overworked (Physios)
Dont forget the passengers (players)....

27th Feb 2016, the day we sold our souls to a 'billionaire accountant' who will turn out to be nothing more than a front for Usmanovs ill-gotten fortune.
Accountants can make good money, but to make billions you need to be in bed with the devil and unfortunately for us Farhad wouldn't know the difference between Everton and Ebbsfleet before he landed at our door.
We were desperate for a chance to be meaningful again so let it go, even when Usmanov showed his face we laughed off any wrongdoings as a billionaire accountant would make sure 'Uncle Uzzy's' input was legit.
As it turns out we've been used.
Like a girl at high school you knows far too good looking to look near you, but she's wanting to get back at her Ex (Arsenal) so you let yourself believe she loves you and wants whats best.
It's not our fault as such, we fill Goodison every game and have done when we were rubbish long before they showed up at our door, we were/are desperate to succeed, but we went about it in the wrong way and it's coming back to eat us up.
Part of me looks at the situation just now, and the doom and depression that's going through a lot of our heads all day everyday, and thinks we 'might' be happier in the old 2nd division being relevant and winning more than we lose. The other part of me thinks we die if we stay down there more than one season.
But watching us struggle to sign journeymen on paydays they never would get anywhere else season after season, what I would give for a team of young hungry footballers wanting to succeed at Everton, and a manager that tries to instil a football team to play football rather than scrap for points and play percentages, the part of me that thinks we would be happier resetting in the league below is getting louder by the day.
And I love Goodison, always have done, always will do, don't need a shiny new stadium to be Everton FC, I just hope it's all worth it in the end.

I agree. We’ve been run like an old boys club who were happy to maintain the status quo so the board could continue to quaff their champagne as part of the established elite at the time.
