When Did The Rot Set In?

The best you get and will ever get out of Iwobi is when he basically instantly releases the ball, he receives the ball on the turn ( so basically a single touch ) and plays a pass forward in that same movement.
The second he has to think of where to go/ what his next move is, is a second too long.

Thinking is the biggest Detriment to his game...

Who'd of ever thought 'Professional Football' in the 21st century doesn't require a football brain, but you see it too often nowadays.
The introduction of 'Heavy Metal Football' to combat 'Tiki taka' was the introduction of that.
A lot of teams over the past decade have taken on genetics and athletisism over football ability, was it James Rodrigues who said the no.10 position is dead.
I think there is a turn in the cycle were there is a re introduction of your footballers who are footballers first over athletes (Grealish, Foden etc).
But as much of a machine Haaland is, technically je's good, but not great.........its his size and pace that make him stand out.
Look at what £80 million quid gets you across the park in Darwin Nunez! He's a big lump, athletic and not the best technically, but still stands out as a good player in the PL because of his athleticism

One of the things I usually point to was that after our last league title we lost our manager, appointed someone not up to the job as his replacement and his only movement in the transfer market that summer was to bring in a reserve goalie when we realistically could've attracted anyone being Champions.

By contrast at the same time Liverpool, who'd finished empty-handed, went out and quickly recruited Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton and went on to have one of their best ever sides in 87/88 winning the title by miles. Why couldn't we have been in interested in these players when they became available? Ok, maybe not Aldo, like.

We, at best, stood still in the summer of 1987 when our rivals stole a march on us when it was us that were in a position of strength being we'd just won the league. We've been playing catch-up ever since.

Aspects of this are true however I think had the bedrock /foundation been good in the first place we would have done well. Moyes papered over the cracks of Kenwrights shambolic running of a Premier League club hence why the wheels started to come off with Martinez then after that Moshiri was basically trying to build a castle on top of a swamp. Add to that the fact that Kenwright and his mates were given access to the new credit card rather than replaced and here we are.
I do think Kenwright is the common denominator for the entirety of Everton’s suffering. While Moshiri has been utterly poo since his arrival, Kenwright clinging to the club has probably been a bigger hindrance in us getting anywhere than anything else imo.

As I said elsewhere not allowing the managers to clear house and build there own staffs in favor of retaining “Everton legends” is one of the many issues we have dealt with since Moyes left the club. He’s a goon that hides behind Moshiri.

Interesting read, if you have time on your side

Excerpt

"...What does any of this mean you may ask? Its simple, the great alchemist’s have been at work for eighteen months now. What has their much vaunted mystical Strategic Review produced? The answer is simply Nothing! No elixir of life no football Holy Grail. In fact, the club is continuing to sink at an alarming rate. Everton Football Club have a Championship level manager, a Championship level team and a DOF, who while seemingly making some strides around the academy, may not see eye to eye with the manager. A DOF who so far has been particularly hopeless in the transfer market to boot. Added to this we have the Premier League claiming the club have broken Profit and Sustainability rules. ..."

We fell of our perch in the late eighties and into the early 90s right when sky TV brought into the English game and revolutionised it. The worst possible time to slip cos once you had left the top table it was very difficult to get back as the gap between the haves and the have nots was massive.

Dr David Marsh, does anyone else remember him? A Littlewoods asset striper on behalf of the Moores family whose allegiance had pivoted toward Anfield. Sadly then it was Johnson with Kenwright with his empty wallet directing The Echo and sadly the fanbase. A man with little real wealth is now rich beyond his wildest dreams whilst our club is skint and to be honest crap. Great fans though, let down by my generation. Our early eighties anger died away with a couple of titles.

Interesting to see a video on Twitter of Joe Royle at the end of the 95/96 season talking up a title challenge the following year. Only way that's happening any time soon is if we get relegated.

Moyes was good for us but at the same time he protected a terrible owner who was always far more interested in retaining control of the club than putting Everton back where it had been for most of its existence.

I'd say Moyes masked the problems and as soon as he left the rot wasn't too far from spreading throughout the club. Many people predicted it'd fall apart on Moyes' departure and they weren't wrong.

Hopefully, like Mark Twain we will be able to write in a few weeks "The report of my death was an exaggeration"

Ok if i re word it better for you.

Iwobi shouldn't be put in the situation to be one of our main crosser's of the ball as he isn't great at crossing.
His attributes and skill set are better utilised in the middle, were he performs far better!
Yeah he is more dangerous in the middle. But only for his own goal. Ridiculous to think that the horendous footballer should play in the most important position….

8 assists now for Iwobi this season.
Only De Bruyne, Saka, Trossard, Olise, Maddison & Mahrez have more than him.
He has created more 'non set piece' chances than any player from the 'other 14' teams in the league.

Iwobi is a good player...with better players around him, and used properly, he would be better
