What's happened to our academy?

Like @Eggs we went out in the morning and played football, be it on the grass verge outside our houses and that was hail, rain or snow. We also played on school fields with home made goals we made ourselves as we got older. We never had PlayStation or video games or mobile phones, hear the Violins we played footy, cricket, tennis etc. Couldn't afford Hovis either.
Can't believe you didn't turn out to be England's leading goal scorer if you were a streetballer who grew up playing footy on the streets like all the real players do...

Playing footy was part of growing up, growing now is determined by algorithms and podcasters.

SAD

i imagine as well city have the best (most highly paid anyway) coaches in the world and the most ridiculous facilities, so for many they might know they’re highly unlikely to make it city, but it might be the best coaching theyre going to get at that age
Exactly. I wonder how many parents/kids see it almost like a university for football. Even if you don't make it there, or same at Chelsea, great chance of earning a bog contract at another club.

Yep, and even using that term university they probably have very high paid tutors and education staff too, so I imagine a good chance of coming out with a good level of education and qualifications too

There aren't less kids playing football, there are just less kids playing football in the street outside people's houses. From memory last time I looked Sport England data suggested somewhere around 70% of school aged boys played football at least once a week, I doubt the figures would have been significantly higher than that when you were a kid.
I played football 7 days a week once the weather was good
Street football , shopping centre car park with lights , school playgrounds anywhere we could

Our youth system needs overhauling different era etc but young players need the encouragement to come through to the first team imo
If they need encouragement they don't have the right mentality. Players who are good enough will be given opportunities. They then need to take them. HA hasn't shown he is a better option then any of our more experienced players at the moment.

Joey, he`s a young lad learning his trade, any first team exposure for him, can only be a good thing.

His time will come.

Anyway, Aznou is feeling a bit lonely, can you head over to his thread and start slating Moyes on his behalf.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Who is that player never seen him - oh its a DM special ... sign them & leave them to rot ....

...do you think that's how much a 17/18 year old in Chelsea's academy is getting?
I think its a sensible recruitment strategy.
If i had a kid in an academy at the age between 6-14 and every club wanted him, id probably suggest he does City as they have the best facilities, the best coaches etc, treat it as a training school.
Once you hit 14-16 and you are starting to think about pathways, that is when you can go and have a look at a club that might give you the better pathway after spending 5-6 years at the best football school in the country.

Its sort of like you are treating it like the U.S sports system of and training at college up to a certain point and then the draft comes for you to join your professional team
