What precisely is the reason that LD and Ricky D aren't starting opposite each other?

I am absolutely not an expert on this game, so please tell me if I am being tard.

But what I see is a lot of slow play (and in the case of Saha, flat out disinterest). Baines makes spirited runs and exhausts himself for 90 mins, only to be stuck on the left corner, serving in crosses to an empty box. Saha has no interest in putting in effort and seems to have forgotten how to use his feet.

LD and Ricky Drenthe, however, force the issue. Ever since Landon's return, he hustles for balls, pressures the other side and tries to make things happen. He passes and moves and almost seems to catch his teammates offguard (because, you know, he wants them to actually move to his passes rather than passing to their standing position). Drenthe does the same (although he has a bit of ballhog in him).

When they played together late yesterday, things started happening. This seems to be indisputable. A microcosm of the state of this club: Ricky moves the ball up the right, looking for something, anything. LD comes sprinting into the picture in support. They play off each other, get stuck, and kick the ball out after a flurry of activity. The ball rolls to Neville who, bless his heart, has a look on his face like "what the **** do you want me to do with this?". And possession ends.

Explain to me why Moyes isn't seeing this, or why he does see it but chooses not to use it, or whether my Yank brain is too addled with American throwball and basketball to understand.

TIA

I literally can't explain it.

Except to say I don't beleive Moyes like Drenthe at all.
He doesn't trust him I don't think.

Even though he's clearly ace.

Drenthe has only just come back from illness/injury. Once both are match fit I see no reason why they shouldn't both start.

Warm Body

Sexy and I know it.

Who's the warm body? Anichebe did little to nothing yesterday. I like Straq but he seems to have uneducated feet. He enjoys falling over in midfield without the ball and no one around him. It's sort of endearing though.

I'm not sure Moyes rates Drenthe either. There's something fishy about his 'illness' to me. I find it surprising that Moyes has used both of them. I thought he might substitute one for the other. The logical thing, especially at home, would be to have them flanking the striker and to give them the freedom to just attack. We'd have a solid midfield three behind them, which would also help to cover for the fullbacks getting forward.

In short, I don't think Moyes knows what to do with creative players.

We'll see against Villa. I can't really see Drenthe not starting if he's fit enough to play 20 mins after illness. The only excuse would be not starting Donovan every game because he's 'not quite there yet'. I'd like to think we'll see both.

I think in the main he would start them both, specially at home. I do think he's worried about starting drenthe in the away games against the big teams though.

Before Donovan goes back I'll love to see even if only once
