What does it take to be an Everton manager?

TFG missed a trick last summer. How we didn't pounce for this Iraola feller I dont know.

As it stands...

What does it take to become an Everton manager? The guile to walk into a Chairmans office, give them as much bull as you can about how good you are, and what you can bring, and walk out with a £10m contract. 😄

I’d love a football version of Donald Trump to become Everton manager, with a delusional but effective approach, and developing a ‘Make Everton Great Again’ cult of personality that half of Evertonians love, and the other half hate.

  • 300% tariffs on the cost of away tickets at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
  • Repeatedly threaten to annex the RS, to strip them of their resources.
  • Publicly berate opposition managers that don’t have the decency to wear a suit when they come to HDS.
  • Sign off social media comments and tirades with ‘THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!’

If there is little or insufficient financial backing then other than a thick skin it doesn't matter a lot what qualities you have. Given reasonable financial support to obtain decent standard players, then a man who attempts to play attacking attractive football gets the fans' support.

If you look at our History- a former EFC player's from the 1950s onwards are the only Managers to win us trophies from Cliff Britton onwards - earlier than that the team used to be run by a committee with also the Captain of our club being involved in team selections- Cliff Britton did take us down but gained us a promotion in 1954 ...
No other Managers other than former players have fetched us success even Billy Bingham should havevwon the first division, but his team collapsed in the last 6 games....
A coincidence true , but a fact - we came close with Gordon Lee & DM .....

A good start would be a manager who has zero respect for Liverpool, and for that matter the other top teams. I want someone who doesn't give a toss what they've won or what they've spent and goes into every single game without fear. We've had an inferiority complex for way too long.
So a manager with no knowledge of football?

Moyes as a manager really divides the fan base. Kind of the way Pep does. I like to think about if Moyes were manager of Barca, Man City, or Real Madrid would he lead them to trophies or is it a function of the team assembled and anyone could have success as a manager? The other is if you brought Pep here right now would he transform our team around better than Moyes?

I think Moyes is good for us now. I think Pep could extract more. But I think they’d both hit a ceiling with this club. I think Pep is one of the most successful managers I’ve ever seen. I’ve also seen him at the helm of the largest clubs with the most elite players and deepest financial resources. I think Moyes could drop into Man City and lead them to Europe.

What impresses me is what can you do as a manager when your hands are tied somewhat. This is where Moyes finds himself. He needs to be more creative in his top XI. What will he do to solve our striker issue? Would he ever bench both Beto and Barry for something different entirely? My gut says no. But that’s what it takes right now to be an Everton manager.

For me it’s avoid the young , bright managers who talk a good game in the podcast/ interview but can’t deliver on the pitch consistently yet…..then revisit them 5 years later . Lampard falls into that category as does Silva, Potter probably too sometime in the future. The biggest proponent of this is Will Still at Southampton, revisit him in five years and I think he’ll be good. Catch them at their “ Goldilocks “ moment when they’re still bright and enthusiastic but have tasted a few hard years to mature them and have honed their skills.

Here's one to ponder. Stemming from the discussion in the Moyes thread about what might have been if we'd kept Silva, it set me thinking about what a daunting job managing EFC must be.

I've seen debates for bright young things; outrage at Managers for being unconcerned about x,y,z; for being out dated dinosaurs; praise for innovation; opprobrium for not getting the fans; complaints over being nice but naive; debates over being too positive or not being realistic enough; bemoaned for being too negative; irritation for being a front man for the club and not challenging the boatd; for having to front up for the club in ansentia etc etc.

Everton are unmistakable a huge club with a demanding fan base who'll let you know exactly what they think, which can spin in a dime. Tough job no?

Personally I lean towards a more experienced head with a track record. Bar a generational talent I think the job is too big for bright young things. You need a set of stones and the nous to deal with the flak when things aren't going so well.

So what skills does your perfect Everton manager need?
Spurious links to either of two Scottish main club sides and a load of hinted at drama between their knubhead* fans. Works also for players, the more innuendo and general doom gathering the better. More yakking nonsense than a days worth at the beauty salon. Fill your boots...

I guess since Joe Royle, it was to accept we had gone from Waitrose to Uncle Cyril's Emporium half way down Penny Lane. Bingham spent big and took us nearly there. Lee not quite as big a spend but a season or two of lovely football, that was our seventies. Spend big but no Cigar. The eighties even under Colin balanced out like the sixties, it was top 6 in the Country stuff overall. An Everton Manager needs a good sense of humour and to remember, even your best will never be good enough.
