Here's the thing about James Mercer. He makes wonderful pop music. At it's best, it's otherworldly. But I don't think he's made a TRULY great album yet, not of the 5 star variety. This one isn't either. But it's lovely. I kind of expected more though, since it's been like 5 years since the last one.

I've never listened to The Shins before, just looked up some info on them and see they've been going since 1996, I had no idea. I'm not really sure if I should start with that album or go with the debut first?

That's my preferred method, because then you can experience them as if you'd been into them along. The first album is a cracker. Stuff of Indie legend.

Same here really, but if someone recommends a particular album to you it can be a bit impractical to go right from the start, you do get the best experience though. I think I'll get my hands on the debut album and start there.

Mate, I'm an ex-NME reader of a certain age and I adore Bill Drummond. Fuhk, I own two books by him. I even have a (digital) copy of 1987: What the [Poor language removed] is going on?
