I have to give a shout out in memory of Tom Petty. I'm not sure how he is viewed in England, but Tom Petty is an icon here. I'm not sure there's an American artist who so uniquely represents a national zeitgest, if such a thing exists. As Marc Maron said in his most recent stand up special “Everybody loves Tom Petty and burritos”. If you look at the tributes online it's every type of fan/musician/generation/political ideology.
I found another good quote that sums him up as well: “Tom Petty’s music doesn’t necessarily demand a value judgment. It’s like having an opinion on tap water or concrete. Why bother? It’s just there, reliable to the point of invisibility. If it went missing, you would notice. But it’s never going missing, because Tom Petty has existed since the beginning of time, and will continue to exist until time is extinguished.”
As for my own words, I posted this yesterday on Facebook:
I'm not sure I know anyone who doesn't like Tom Petty at least a little bit. He was really great at the straight head Rickenbacker driven rock, but I've always had a soft spot for this weird little psychedelic song that doesn't have any the characteristics of a typical pop song that got played on the radio. Then, near the end, it explodes into this stomp worthy rocker until stops suddenly. It's not constructed like any top 40 hit I've ever heard, and it's certainly not the formula for radio play, then or now. So aside from loving it as a song, I respect the man, and his band, that wrote it. It's a shame Tom Petty won't come around here no more.
RIP TP.
