I was working in the US at the time the Blair Witch Project came out, I went to see it (by chance) before it had much press or notoriety and assumed it was a documentary.

It scared the bejasus out of me until I realised afterwards it was a poorly shot b movie.

It was bloody scarry thinking it was real though.

Was pretty much the perfect marketing campaign, which is hilarious as the marketing probably cost a tenner.

all of 2001, and the bit in 2010 where HAL tells Floyd to look behind him

Neither film is gory (obviously), but the first one really introduces the viewer to the idea that we are nothing (edit: which is pretty terrifying) and the second is deceptively normal until that bit, which has never failed to freak me out.

It Follows is my favorite horror film as of late (it came out in 2014, but I only recently saw it). I was genuinely surprised by how much of the imagery in that film stuck in my head and scared me late at night. Midsommar was super fun. VVitch was a great slow-burn. It Comes at Night was quite good.

I agree that Scream was brilliant.

It scared the bejesus out of me too and then I found out it was set about 20 miles from where I was living - an area I drove through all the time. I had to stop taking the dogs for a walk in the nearby woods as I was suddenly hearing every twig snap. A grown man FFS.
One of my kids told me recently that the cast did not know it was the cres making the scary noises outside the tent and were genuinely scared..... don't know if its true...
