Walking

Won`t be long before they are pretty much everywhere suitable the way they are going.

Along with Peregrines a tremendous conservation success story.

Unfortunately Kestrels are going the other way and they don`t know why.
Lots of brilliant conservation for Red Kite. They were so rare about 20 years ago and now the population is growing well.

Peregrine's too, some really good spaces in cities have been opened up for nesting pairs - church steeples and space in tower blocks.

I read that the change in climate and impact on the food source was having a huge effect on Kestrels, sad to see.

I had to take a bit of time off last year due to a bad knee. Hurting as I was coming down hill. Seems to have cleared up now after a bit of physio.

My favourite of the Brecon Beacons:
Hillwalking can be tough on the knees alright. We did Crinkle Crags from Langdale a few weeks back (sent the kids over the Bad Step no prob) and 20 mins in I realised I'd left the walking sticks in the car. Thought it wasn't worth going back for them and paid the price, knees were crying and sore for ages afterwards.
What sort of physio were you doing - squats and the like? I know some people swear by them but others say they can't go near a squat as it's too aggravating for the joint.

Up in the Lakes next week so will get some stuff in. My eldest is 10 and is showing signs of CBA out hillwalking, so need to whip that out of him with some inspirational routes.

It was a combination of things really. Swimming to keep it moving and help with cardio - less stress on the joints.

Some squats and gym leg presses as they engage more of the muscles in the leg, but I learned from the physio that my main issue was my back which was causing the rest of my muscles to tighten and overwork.

I'd definitely go to see a physio rather than self prescribe as you can do some serious harm if you get it wrong.

I'd say around Malham & Gordale Scar is excellent, maybe haystacks as there is always lots to see. Plenty of decent walks around Edale as well, some routes around there that you can see crashed planes from WW II

Thks - I have seen a physio but they're a mixed bag IME. The guy I see is decent, but sees any problem in terms of strength [rather than say flexibility or an imbalance]. He's prob not wrong most of the time but it's like if all you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.

We were up on Bleaklow just the other weekend as it goes, around the crashed B-29. Easy walk from Snake pass.

Were you referred by your GP or source them yourself?

I`ve only ever used - Zamberlan`s, for the past 30 yrs mate.

They are beautiful boots, the leather is incredibly soft, high quality and doesn`t split as long as you look after them ( use Nikwax etc after drying out )

You can get them resoled once the soles go.

They ain`t cheap, but they really are worth paying for.

If they're walking/Mountaineering boots they have to be Italian!

my dad is a keen walker, him, me, my son, my little bro and little sis are all walking in the Caucasus mountains in Georgia in a few weeks.
Basically mountains between Russia and Iran, bears, wolves and weirdos abound

It’s a cool place. I climbed Elbrus back in 2004

I've had a history of knee problems. After putting up with it for 20 years with the local quacks being not much use, I randomly went to a podiatrist with my flat feet.

Straight away he said "I bet you have knee problems too" - to do with the way the knee twists when the arch flattens. He gave me some shoe inserts and within a day or so the tendonitis in my knee had gone.

Now whenever I have a joint pain it's almost invariably down to tendonitis. I spend a while prodding related muscles until I invariably find a knot to work on. They're painful areas of muscle which haven't relaxed and develop scar tissue. The constant pulling on the tendon is what causes the inflammation down the line. I grit my teeth and give the knot a good hard massage with thumbs, or s tennis ball if I can't reach, followed by stretching and some ibuprofen and normally that brings good long lasting relief.
