Player Valuation: £25m
On this. Don't think it counts as a failure. Can't recall how many of the deadwood on big contracts we let go, but have got 3ish new starters and 3 or 4 players for the bench. Hopefully some of those on the bench will come good this year after a bit of time bedding in, but if not they've upped the overall quality in the squad imo; which by the way is also vitally important. Barry better option than Chermiti or Broja, Rohl better option than Harrison or Lindstrom, and so on. I don't think our transfer business has been half as bad as people make out (I also think it would look a lot better if Moyes had used the squad more intelligently, too).Don’t think I used the term ‘complete overhaul’. But having 8/9/10 of the same players from the Dyche era in the team just can’t be a success can it?
I’m also not writing off January transfer windows. When Newcastle were taken over they bought Guimares, Trippier, Wood and Burn in the January window.
The following January they signed Gordon.
Yet it ‘doesn’t really count’ for us?
On this, yes we can look to Newcastle with envy and, sure, they have gone large in the January windows. So have City by the way. They are the sort of clubs who can afford to pay the £m premium for mid-season Transfers, though. We - like almost everyone else in the Premier League - can't: different ownership, different financial capacity, different vibes. Context is important. So no, I don't think it does really count for us, with good reason
