Victor Anichebe - what can we expect?

Being honest, we have only seen fleeting glimpses of the player he could be, and he could be a very good player. If he had developed to the level he is capable of, and performed to the level consistantly, you would be paying a lot more than £6m for him, so for that reason, I think you have got him for a good price.

Over the last 2 years he has matured as a player and has arguably been our best all round forward player in that time, but quite honestly, I think in the minds of some, he was always gonna be the stroppy 19-20 year old he was a few years back.

He was unfortunate in that he came through with his best mate, James Vaughan, who the fans loved as he was fast, exciting and gave 100%, 100% of the time, while Vic was a different type of player, a foil for Vaughan if you will, and at that point, was still growing. You only need to see him now, compared to a couple of years ago to see how he has physically changed. Vaughan still looks the same as when he broke through.

So he was never a fans favourite, and was always "The other 1", and for that reason, he was never truly appreciated. That led to him developing a bit of a sulky attitude, and after he asked for a transfer a few years back, turning down a new conbtract, and asking for a ridiculous pay rise, a lot of the fans who already didn't like him, went off him more, and he's had an uphill battle since.

He has all the tools to develop into a fantastic player, but honestly, i don't think it was gonna happen for us, and a change is good for all 3 parties.

He is capable of a lot, and I for 1, hope he really becomes that player for you. i wish him all the luck in the world.

P.S. You could do worse than trying to partner him again with Vaughan. Always thought the two of them would be great together for someone.

Disagree about it being good for us losing him, but otherwise that is a brilliant post, mate.

Evertonians let their previous opinions form reputations that are hard to shatter, probably like most fans. But if you just look at the last 2 years Vic has been a different player in every way -- physically, mentally and in terms of output too. If we'd have sold that stroppy 20 year old Vic for £6m I'd be laughing, but we've sold a maturer 24 year old Vic who's shown more recently than anyone thought possible.

From what I have seen of Shane Long, I don't reckon Vic will give you as much. However, I think he will score winners for you 3 or 4 times in tight games against mid-table sides.
Nailed on he scores against Everton!

Really don't get some of the Victor hate. He was our best striker last season, sorry to see him go to be honest. Would rather have him over Kone and Jelavic as he offers more of a threat than them. He is very injury prone though.

Yeah, I agree, its a shame to see him go, I just meant in the terms of, we got £6m for him and got Lukaku, who I don't think we would have signed if Vic had stayed.

But yeah, it's a shame he had to move to try and fulfil his potential. Just hope he doesn't haunt us like so many others. At least we got West Brom out the way before we sold him.

LOL

Can't say I'm thrilled to lose him over the likes of Kone and Jelavic. I think he would have been a great option to come in when our midfield isn't linking with the striker, like against Cardiff.

He's a blunt instrument and should probably score more goals, but he's a valuable player.

I liked Victor. He, as a lot of people had mentioned towards the end of this thread, really turned himself around towards the end of his stint here.
I feel that when he and Vaughan broke through, the Fulham good friday game, really stuck in my memory, and the pair were just unplayable that day (Might not have been that game, mind), and I think Every fan sat there and thought, well, we have a pair of crackers here, but the thing was Vaughan would be everywhere on the pitch, whilst Anichebe would do more of a hold up job.
When you put it this way, who are you gonna like more Gareth Barry or Kevin Mirallas, Barry might give solid 100% efforts every week, but Mirallas has the flair and ability to change a game!
Unfortunately, Vaughan suffered through injuries, and our own expectations wanted more from Anichebe, especially when he went on that Uefa Cup run a couple of years ago scoring against Kharkiv, Nurnburg etc...
When things went a little sour, and the fans got on his back he took it badly, and it reflected, complaining, moaning, generally doing nothing in games ala Heskey. Fans wanted to see More of Vaughan, but by then he needed a new start.
His attitude DID stink, but i found that he turned it around alot over the last two seasons, lets face it, Moyes was the manager, the lad had to live off scraps, and he was never the striker who'd beat 4-5 players then rifle a shot into the top bin.

He's not a prolific scorer either, but his workrate has improved! And i feel sick that we have bloody Kone (30) and Jela (28) as strikers when Victor, at 24 is farmed out, at £6m, however is terrific value for us NOW, but given a proper chance, he could still develop.
I'd rather have Lukaku any day, but give him a run, and he will do okay.
Shame he wasn't given a proper go under a manager who didn't succumb to favoritism so much, but that's football and good luck to the lad.

Early in his career he was lambasted for his poor attitude and tendency to drift in and out of games, and rightly so. Everyone could see his potential as a player but he never fulfilled this. He's strong, can hold up the ball excellently, isn't too bad at laying it off and is a decent finisher.

In the last year and a half we have begun to see glimpses of the player Anichebe could be, he put in some real high quality performances and seemed to lose those attitude problems he had. Consistency has always been his problem and you'll probably find that he'll have a run of ten or so games where he'll score a few, then go on a dry spell without scoring. He's always had the potential to score 10 - 15 goals but whether he can do that for you I'm not too sure, he needs a consistent run in the side.

I don't know if he's a £6m player at the moment but he has the potential to offer you something else up top, I for one hopes he does well.

The only positive i can think of is that if Kevin Ratcliffe is ever co-commentating on a WBA game you will piss your pants laughing at him trying to pronounce Anichebe.

Your groundsman is going to be a busy boy. Vic slaps the turf that much that the Hawthornes will resemble the Somme after a couple of games.

Oh and he's likely to neck loads of protein and bench-press your biggest defender for brekkie.

Had his best year last and look very good against Juventus in pre-season where he once again demonstrated that his work ethic has improved massively. We never got to see the best of him due to a combination of injuries, lack of maturity and being played out wide as right winger! His raw strength is his biggest asset but composure and an iffy first touch let him down.
