Another terrible decision. Clear handball by Hernandez and the VAR didn't persuade the ref that it was deliberate. What is the 'kin point of this dogs breakfast of a "system"?

For me though it's the social media debate. People lambast social media, but really it's how people are using it that is the problem. VAR is the same, the system is good and it's given far more good decisions than bad this WC. But the ref in that Portugal-Iran game was poor and VAR just highlighted that even more. But that's not VAR's fault, that's FIFA giving inexperienced refs from poor leagues such a big game.

VAR in previous World Cups would have stopped the maradona handball goal, Lampard's shot would have counted, Ireland would have made the WC finals. It may not be the perfect system yet, but it should stop any massive miscarriages of justice like we've had in the past.
Has it? Really?! It's brought the game into disrepute like no major single refereeing mistake ever could.

If they are going to have this VAR then they need to be getting fairly straightforward decisions right otherwise what is the point of it?

That should have been a penno for Sweden.

But the technology is there to stop human error...which proves once and for all that the spurious "science" defence of VAR is nonsense and it's all about interpretation and opinion at the end of the day, so why have it?
Its to better inform those human decisions imo. Cant really compare it to other tech like goal line tech or hawkeye in tennis etc. They provide either a yes or no with no in between. Its gonna be nigh on impossible to get it perfect but its better than the status quo.

And that is why VAR will be good for the game. That would have been offside and Germany would be taken a quick free kick and moved on.
But the exact same logic allows somebody to say 'and that's why VAR will be bad for the game, two almost identical handball decisions referred in the space of 24 hours and we get different outcomes'. There are undoubtedly good things that can come from VAR, the argument hinges on whether they outweigh the bad.

The Rules of the game are interpreted by the Referee. They will never be 100% consistent match to match as the refererees intpretation differs slightly. ie What is accessive force etc.

What the VAR panel should be doing is quickly answering a question for the referee, "Should I look at the incident from multiple angles to determine if my decision was correct?" Then after a short pause, the referee can either standby their decision or change it. However, they cannot have been influenced by the VAR Panel. So verbal communication is not necessary. A simple audible response can tell the ref if the answer to their question is Positive or not.

However, this still leaves a degree of interpretation and therefore not all VAR decisions will be 100% correct in everyones eyes.

Video assistant referees (VAR)
How does video assistant referee improve the game?
Find out how VAR will be used at the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ at www.FIFA.com/VAR.

When is VAR used?
Three main incidents (plus one administrative) have been identified as game-changing.
- Goals
The role of the VAR is to assist the referee to determine whether there was an infringement that means a goal should not be awarded. As the ball has crossed the line, play is interrupted so there is no direct impact on the game.
- Penalty decisions
The role of the VAR is to ensure that no clearly wrong decisions are made in conjunction with the award or non-award of a penalty kick.
- Direct red card incidents
The role of the VAR is to ensure that no clearly wrong decisions are made in conjunction with sending off or not sending off a player.
- Mistaken identity
The referee cautions or sends off the wrong player, or is unsure which player should be sanctioned. The VAR will inform the referee so that the correct player can be disciplined.

How does video assistant referee (VAR) work?

Step 1
Incident occurs
The referee informs the VAR, or the VAR recommends to the referee that a decision/incident should be reviewed.
Step 2
Review and advice by the VAR
The video footage is reviewed by the VAR, who advises the referee via headset what the video shows.
Step 3
Decision or action is taken
The referee decides to review the video footage on the side of the field of play before taking the appropriate action/decision, OR the referee accepts the information from the VAR and takes the appropriate action/decision

I couldn't find that too easily when googling about. Any chance of stickying this in the thread? @GrandOldTeam
