One of my friends is an immigration attorney...she's loaded BTW.
Anyway, I asked her about the recent defections of the Cuban players/coach. Them defecting made their immigration immediate...had they waited, they'd be subject to normal immigration laws.

...I was in Cuba not so long ago and there is nothing USA related in sight. Plenty of holidaymakers from Canada but no obvious USA folk, no MacDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken or other franchises. Amazing when Florida is so close. Money talks and is probably why the Cold War is thawing.

If you are Cuban and make it ashore then you get citizenship. With the trade embargo and this policy its only a matter of time before the whole entire communist regime topples.

I don't think the Russians even care anymore.
What's hilarious is that you could argue that Cuba is not only the last communist state left standing, but they are also far and away the most successful*.
*This requires a different way of measuring success. One, China isn't communist anymore, let's get real. Two, Cubans may not be wealthy, but they're some of the healthiest around. Long lives, relatively high literacy rates, they're way better off than the North Koreans or any other planned economies.
