Uruguayan Targets Martinez Missed Out On?

1) I said 'The next superstar'
2) Rooney hasn't become the superstar everyone expect, in my opinion. He is not a global brand like Messi or Ronaldo, which he could've been.
Rooney is as global a brand as they come. Ronaldo and Messi are huge worldwide stars, but Wayne isn't far behind. I would definitely argue that he would be more likely recognized than any of Bayern or say Juventus' players. He plays for Man Utd which are the biggest brand in sports in the English-speaking world. The Spanish-speaking world loves their Barcelona's and Real Madrid's, but outside of the Spanish-speaking world Man Utd would likely be the most recognizable brand and Rooney is the face of it. Not to mention he's been playing for England for a decade and been to lot's of international tournaments.

Like what you did here... been to lots of international tournaments.

The only one he actually played in, he was still an Everton player if my memory serves me correctly.

Would be genuinely interested to know from the US GOT contingent whether Rooney is a recognised brand over there. I'd be surprised if he was anywhere near as recognisable as say Beckham, the ultimate football brand (not trying to correlate brand and ability btw)

He's captain of Manchester United and England.. I'm sure a few people can recognise him lol

I'm pretty sure he is a huge global brand mate. His Nike sponsorship alone would cement that. The fact that he's captain of the UK's biggest club and England won't do any harm either.

Recognizable for sure. Nike is a powerful brand. EA Sports too.

Hard to compare Beckham and him...especially after Beckham played here so long. Had a movie with his title in it and such. He defo had/has a good publicity team.

Well I live in Canada which is close enough. I can tell you this now. Most of the ones into their "soccer" over here watch football in one of three ways: 1) The Premier League (Which Utd still appear to have the largest fan base over here, mostly due to them being the most accessible or easiest to watch and buy merch for), 2) Champions League (This is where the fan boys get to see Ronaldo and Messi in action because there isn't much Liga BBVA on the cheap cable packages) and 3) Internationals.

As a result of that I would say Rooney is definitely up there in 3rd place for most reputable player over here. It's usually the only reason (uneducated) people know of us.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the FIFA videogames, which Rooney has been on the cover off lots and tons of people play with Utd.

Well that's not true... He's played in more than the 2004 Euros.

He's played a part in the 2006. 2010, and 2014 World Cups as well as the 2012 Euros which are all widely broadcast here in Canada.

Beckham is a way bigger name here to anyone who doesn't follow football (soccer for us). I'm sure lots of sports fans here have heard of Wayne Rooney, but if I had to ask random people - let's say, all the people I work with - I think only a few would know Rooney, while the majority would know who Beckham is.

However, that doesn't necessarily answer the question, because those same people that have heard of Beckham, have most likely not heard of Messi or Ronaldo. People here know Beckham for his looks and celebrity status.
