I currently have 4gb or RAM on my computer but it is getting more and more sluggish. When I (for example) play Football Manager and use Firefox and listen to music via MediaMonkey it really struggles, the fan comes in, the computer sounds like it's about to take off and it's a nightmare to use.

A RAM upgrade should make some difference, right? I am thinking it would be cool to upgrade to 8gb. Is it likely to make a big difference?

My CPU is a dual core 1,80 or something. The laptop itself is about 1.5 years old, however I am a bit worried the motherboard won't be suitable for DDR3 RAM...

Komputerbay 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM (204 pin) 1333Mhz PC3 10600 8 GB - CL 9

Thanks for any advice!

Go to www.crucial.com then look for
Your computer model and make, make a note of the ram type, then eBay for the cheapest type, try mrmemory.co.uk too

4GB is enough for music and FM mate, Id first get some compressed air and blow the fans first..

Yeah I was about to say. 4GB is decent for a laptop, and for what the OP says he uses his computer for, I don't think any more would be necessary or even make that much of a noticeable difference.

What graphics card and CPU does it have exactly mate? That's more important to be honest.

Also laptops generally do seem to have poor ventilation so I'd defo do what Bry says and also make sure when you use it it's elevated reasonably well.

Perform a disk clean up, defrag, uninstall unwanted or not needed programs and applications, get r rid of Norton security if you have it, then try again, if its still slow then upgrade your ram

I will rob a can of compressed air today from work and clean out the fans. Let's see if that does the trick...

re graphics card etc, dunno, I am at work right now. Will post later. It's so annoying how it just blows out hot air all the time, dead loud, fan going at 600 mph when I am basically doing nowt.

It's a Toshiba Satellite something or other laptop.

Dont think RAM is your problem mate http://www.fmformation.net/general-...-pc-mac-system-requirements.html#.UCPncaOCXp0 if you look at the system requirements mate, maybe your processor is overheating a bit, maybe you have a virus slowing things down, maybe your memory i.e. HDD space is nearly full, with 4G of RAM (depending on frequency) and a dual core processor you should have no problems running the game smoothly, wont be graphics, a basic or onboard graphics should be fine, also if you are putting in more RAM firstly make sure it is compatible with your motherboard and you will also have to think of upgrading if not already to a 64bit operating system, for it to come into effect, but definitely give it a good clean out, good luck...

TBH sounds like the 3d match engine is raping your lappy, the fans kick in when the CPU/GPU overheat (i.e. when they have a high load of processing to do, the higher the temperature) and it is trying to expel that stuff.

RAM Upgrade is the cheapest and a very effective way to upgrade your computer/laptop, but unlikely to fix this issue, tbh.

A Specification list of your laptop or model and build number would help, though. If you're running a low-end prcessor with on-board graphics that could be your issue right there.

This is the laptop:

Toshiba Satellite l500 1v9:
Pentium Dual-Core T4400 2x 2.20GHz • 4096MB • 320GB • DVD+/-RW DL • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512MB • 3x USB 2.0/LAN/WLAN 802.11bgn/eSATA • HDMI • 4in1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro) • Webcam (0.3 megapixels) • 15.6" WXGA glare TFT (1366x768) • Windows 7 Home Premium • Li-Ion battery • 2.72kg • 24 months warranty

It should have more than enough to do FM + MUSIC + BROWSING, but really struggles. Have tried compressed air but the fan is still whirring around at a rate of knots, and the bottom of the laptop is really warm.

I am going out later so will do a disk defrag while I am out, I will remove any unnecessary programmes but most are gone yonks ago, and I will see if any of that helps..

Google for ccleaner if you want a one click maintainable shiz.

Compressed air will help! Make sure laptop is off and hold the can the RIGHT WAY
