Boardwalk Empire was good - we missed out on the more recent series because I think the rights changed hands and we could never work out when it was on.

As well as the other suggestions (esp. The Wire and Ray Donovan) have you watched the Danish crime series (The Killing, The Bridge)? The political one, Borgen, is also excellent.

Added: Big recommendation for The Americans as well.

What did you think of Peaky Blinders, being a Midlander (although East!)?

Just finished watching season 3 finale of sons of anarchy. Utter class. Loved it. The finale on season 3 was one of the best I've watched in a long time.

I thought the part where they went over to ireland was probably the poorest episodes of the whole series but the ending to series 3 was sublime
