TV Series

I think the verbosity was to add authenticity to the Victorian setting

Series 4 and 5 already commissioned !
I'm not sure that was the speech of authentic Victorians. Why use one word when ten would do, and overact to the nth degree, seemed to be the ethos of the series, not to mention the ever fanciful plots. Perhaps that's why the BBC decided against recommissioning it and leaving it to Amazon.

Why the US dropped ...The Chicago Code .... after 1 season.... baffles me...........It had so much potential.

I think it's all down to individual views mate. Series 3 imo has benefited from going to Amazon as they have obvioulsy spent more money on the sets etc.

I do agree with why use ten words when one will do, but I think what's been good about this series is the way that other characters have come to the fore, particularly Jerome Flynn. Who'd have thought he would steal the show !

This is the best series so far. The writing is quality and it's a real trip down memory lane. The last episode was funny and tragic at the same time.

What I really like about it is as well as being a social comment, it captures the highs and lows of everyday life for normal people brilliantly. Plus there's an underlying darkness that runs through it, which is there even when the good times are rolling. Outstanding writing with a brilliant cast.

In terms of enjoyment, it's been a really good series. The other two (and the film) had far more emotional impact though. The last episode was almost like 'Five go camping', that one nasty scene aside it was all rather upbeat and funny.

That said, ep 3 has the potential to be a cracker.

Just finished watching series 3 of Ripper Street. Outstanding .
Its top class I agree mate. The acting and writing was outstanding in series 3, the finale was the best ( The peace of Edmund Reid ) with the actor who played the hack Fred Best stealing the honours ( how gut wrenching was his end). Interesting too that Reid and Abberline were real coppers on the Ripper case as well.

Just started watching the Detectorists, gentle easy going comedy about of all things a bunch of nerds in a metal detecting club and I found it excellent and very funny. It's stars include two actors of superb theatrical breeding, Toby Jones, eldest son of Freddie Jones and Rachel Stirling daughter of Diana Rigg.

It is written immaculately by Mackenzie Crook of Pirates of the Caribbean fame who also takes the lead as an odd jobber, hippie style lay about dreamer. He is shacked up with RS, she is a teacher at the local school and his landlady. Toby Jones, who is a brilliant actor despite looks and shape, never known him in a bad thing.

Its well worth a watch and a second series has been put into production,
