TV Series

Closer to the Enemy, written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff.
A classy intriguing drama set in London in 1946. A captain Feguson is given 6 days to persuade an abducted German jet rocket engineer (with his young daughter) to work for the British. With a sub plot of a women investigator from the War Crimes Unit, several shady characters from the intelligence services, glamorous women, all in the background of a blitz destroyed London, it looks like cracking telly. Also some scenes were filmed in Liverpool.

I think I lasted approx 6 mins before falling asleep. Thematically it just felt like I'd seen it soooo many times before. I know WWIII is a rich source of inspiration for screenwriters but this just felt like they were wringing the last drops out of it (woke up to that kids godawful crying, which did little to change my opinion!).

Watched the first black mirror episode. Got bored. Kept skipping while the lack of story happened. Wasn't overly impressed with the whole thing. Might try another episode or I might start watching orphan black again to see if there's any more flesh flashed as I have up on that too after one or two episodes.

Finished Boardwalk Empire.

Really enjoyed it. Great set design and atmosphere. Some weaker episodes and plots sure, but overall it was excellent, with many interesting storylines and characters. And kudos to the actors, wow what a cast. I especially enjoyed Michael Stuhlbarg, Bobby Cannavale and Shea Whigham.

So I thought about watching Deadwood next, is that a good idea?
Boardwalk Empire was heavy going in parts but you're right about the production values - as impressive as any TV show I've ever seen. Buscemi as ever was brilliant, but I agree with the other names you mentioned - I haven't seen Bobby Cannavale in serious roles before, and thought he was excellent. He'd have made a good Negan in The Walking Dead!

Ya cracking show.love paulie and uncle juniors characters in it:)
Most of the lead characters are utter scumbags, but you can't help but be drawn to them. Those two in particular are strangely likeable despite their many flaws. There's that unravelling of them both - Paulie with his non-mum, Uncle June with his onset of Alzheimer's - that makes them very human and vulnerable, and you can't help but sympathise with their characters.

yep on my way. Watched the first season years ago only realised that there were more seasons when I saw the advert. Rewatching season 1 now. Are the other seasons any good?
Season one is it's peak IMO . One of the best seasons of any show so it's hard to keep at that level. Series 2 goes a bit too daft but is still watchable. Series 3 improves a lot and I've only watched one episode of series 4 so far but it's looking good .
