Tour de France 2011

I'd usually be swanning about in here, telling all and sundry how we are THE greatest Sporting Nation on the Planet, but you know what, for unassuming/humble Cadel, I'm just not going to say those things, even though I think them.

Tour de France 2011 - One for the little Aussie Battlers.

Cav gets another win in Paris, his 3rd victory in a row and 5th in this years event, to take the Green jersey, the first time a Brit has ever won a jersey in the Tour. Get in. He's also 2 wins shy of the most ever achieved by a sprinter in the Tour, and he's only been in 4 races so far! He's set to be the greatest sprinter ever I think, kinda criminal he's not more renowned here, especially as he's almost a scouser.

Perhaps worth mentioning also that this has been one of the best Tours of recent years. Lots going on. Sad that Wiggins crashed out, but it's been a really good race. Long may it continue.

Very pleased for Cav and all of HTC. Geraint Thomas too. Knew Evans would kill them all on the TT. I can already hear Contador - "There was no point cycling myself into the ground to try and win the tour this year because they would have taken the win off me a month later anyway with their 'farce' investigation into a couple of steaks".
Good tour, helped pad the summer out, only a month to go till the Football is back. Cav the only rider ever to win the Champs stage three years on the bounce. Phenomenal.

Pleased for Evans. Oldest tour champion since the second world war (aged 34), having come second twice it is a testament to his dedication and character. My rider of the tour goes to two riders, Flecha and Hoogerland both injured by utter stupidity and finished possibly the toughest race on the planet. Young rider and future winner Pierre Rolland. France is beautiful, the Tour is awesome and the atmosphere it creates is second to none.

Well done, Cadel!

Another in a long line of Sporting Champions, and the best Tour in years.

On ya mate.

HTC have folded, can't get a sponsor for next season. So it looks like the group setup to bring Cav home will be broken up. I can't see all of them signing for Sky, and so I can't see Sky catering for him as well as HTC have.
And so disappears the most successful team of the last decade.

Drug dealers everywhere will be devastated.

Was only one doper in the tour this year so far. As for Contador, I expect him to say "I didn't try for the win this year because the authorities were lining up to take it and last years from me".
Churlish!

Saw that today.

Do you really think Evans was doped up? I don't know. I was happy for him but in that sport, you just never know.

Schleck was quoted as saying he wasn't real happy with how it would turn out (with him getting the trophy...)

If Contador was doped up out of his eyelids how did Schleck stick it out toe to toe with him.

The sport is on its knees as it is, I hope the Brits do well in the Olympics and put a bit of shine back on cycling.

I'm being very harsh, I suppose. I'd like to think he's clean but I have a nagging doubt. His trajectory is a bit like Bjarne Riss' - picks up a Grand Tour in his early 30s after a solid but pretty unspectacular career in the Grand Tours. And the way he made a recovery in the final big mountain stage of last years TdF to peg back Schleck after suffering badly was suspicious...a little bit like Landis' recovery a few years back.

As for Schleck: it'll be his name in the history books for 2010, and rightly so.
