The "easy" way around this would be to do their own twist on what they do in Serie B in Italy; If the gap between 3rd and 8th is big enough, 3rd goes up automatically.

Thanks, so top 2 automatic promoted, and then the next two into the semi's, so 5th-8th into the quarters*.
So finishing 5th is the golden place, a quarter, a semi, then the final. 3 extra games, at the end of the season with promotion the prize. It'll shake up the January loans system, I'd expect a few sides might fancy courting a chelsea player or two.

Looking at it, the most lucrative game in football just got that little bit more lucrative. Will the same system be rolled out into league one?

I wonder if there's scope to keep them all exclusively Wembley. 135k in Birmingham on the HS2 line looks a bit more possible.

They want the games, the gates, the travel, and the tv. It'll become it's own end of season spectacle. Rewarding the sides that have not been the best for the season. Looks great on paper. Imagine being for instance an Ipswich fan, and you've made the FA cup final. Could be looking at 4 visits to Wembley in May.

There was a 14 point difference between 3rd and 4th last season (24 points between 3rd and 8th). And it was 4th that came up.

Premier league should do this. Top six do a post season playoff to win a divisional title.

Then have a special game with the winner of the championship playoff in some sort of super cup game.

Split it into four parts and do a big half time show.
