The unsigned Don Revie contract 1973

My first(other than the previous seasons Goodison derby 🙄) experience of Everton doing an "Everton"how we failed to win that title in that season is beyond me,games against the relegated Luton and Carlisle as well as Sheff Utd at home in the "business" end of the season should have been "gimme's"🙄,I remember us beating Derby on their bog of a pitch to go top, they eventually won it ,two up at home to Carlisle, two up at home to Sheff Utd,win both those games we're champions, throw in being one nil up away at Luton and the Carlisle away debacle and we really should have cruised it, apologies for the bad memories contained🙄😂not that I haven't let that season go eh?😉😂👍
Im sure the bookies had us 4/6 on to win the league late on that season

This was under John Moores who was a very ambitious owner and went with the club moto
John Moores ran the club ambitiously. He put his money where his mouth was. One thing that strikes me as incongruous, however, is how he failed to lure a top-class manager after Catterick. We all know of the Bobby Robson failure(s)/near misses. And now, it seems, Revie. Say what you like about Catterick, but he was clearly fishing in the right waters in terms of first choices. But he didn't snare either...and then got lucky in his twilight with Kendall.

Did he have anything to do with Howard coming in?always thought it was Philip Carter and Sir John was just a non executive on the board,I stand to be corrected though👍

Moored put very little of his own money into Everton, he guaranteed to cover loans. He did do a share option and bought most up which did improve finances

Bobby Robson almost joined us twice interviews at Sir John Moores house accepted verbally the job as Manager as long as it was not leaked to the press.ss he wanted to tell the then Ipswich board himself
Alas John Moores told a local journalist he trusted twice & the deal died overnight...

Some say Bobby Robson only wanted to boost his pay at Ipswich town over both deals .

As for Dom Revie yes he was interviewed -& would not except that contract as it was not to his liking & again the job fell through..

In Respect we got Billy Bingham & HK

Billy Bingham through away the chance of winning the title too !

Yes, it all started at Carlisle away.

I went that day, gutted.

70's football is a bit before my time, but this is the guy who Clough took over from at Leeds, telling the players they could throw away their medals as they'd won them by cheating and the same guy who jumped from the England job when a whole load of middle eastern cash was waved at him .

Tell me why that's the sort of person we should have had as a manager

Maybe we should have gone directly to Clough

Don Revie would have been a great manager. People forget just how dominant his Leeds team was. They were also capable of playing brilliant football when they decided to stop hacking down their opponents for a while.
Exactly. A brilliant team and a brilliant manager. Cynical? Yup, but that was 70s football. Hard as nails, snide, knew how to look after themselves, summed up by the great Johnny Giles: silk and steel.

There you go. Same impact in the end.

Compare to Kenwright: poured very little of his own money into Everton and got his shady mates to cover loans.

Brown paper bag, alcoholic, M6 petrol station Clough?

Revie was a product of his time. Why should we have had him as manager? Because he was, like Clough, brilliant with the CV to prove it.

Nil satis and all that. We got Billy Bigot instead.

We tried that too - Clough turn us down as he was forthcoming about the power of the team across the park - the funds were not there to complete with them so he declined the interview allegedly!
