The Moyes Question

Moyes this, Moyes that.. Fact remains that some of the key players were ****e and couldn't be arsed..

I don't give a **** if Moyes had put jags and distin on the right/left wing, there was minimal effort.. It all fell apart when QPR started stringing some passes together.

Players who could be arsed today = Beckford, Barkley, Distin, Baines.

Jags, our anchor played awful (Arsenal on his mind, possibly)
Cahill looked 2 steps slower than everyone.
Osman wouldn't even attempt to win a 50/50 in the air.

As Texas Blade alluded to earlier, we can't deal in absolutes.

Today most of the players were gash, Moyes was gash and our financial gashness had an effect too.

The problem is that most fans refuse to acknowledge all the angles.

Definitely got things wrong today, but still for me...Moyes In.

We know the pattern by now. We'll either stumble through the Carling Cup game or we'll go out. We'll then have 4-6 weeks of erratic form before we start to get a grip and put one or two results together. The Everton job is a really tough one. Moyes knows how to keep our head above water, for all his faults. It's frustrating to watch, but I wouldn't contemplate replacing him if it could at all be helped.

Yup, I'm in the same boat. BUT, he needs to do better with his subs. And he needs to take some risks. He has a tendency to be "safe" a little too much imo. With that said, he's got limited options to work with. Our team and our financial difficulties are hard. He needs to learn and he needs someone to push him. His assistant should be doing that, but maybe Round isn't.

To be honest I think the main problem today was how much we backed off when we didn't have the ball. As soon as we lost it the defensive line went back 30 yards. Hardly any pressing high up the pitch, we were giving the likes of Fitz Hall time to play an easy pass. We used to be decent at that, pinning teams in and overwhelming them with pressure. In fact it's how we scored the majority of our goals. I can only see that as the players' mentality, another **** summer and not great form in preseason has dented their confidence.

Yeah, if he's going to play 4-4-1-1 all the time, we're not going to win many games at Goodison, so we're going to need to pick up points on our travels. It's probably going to be another season where we draw too many games because we can't score or keep a clean sheet.

One thing to notice today is that there were lots of permutations of how our midfield could have lined up. That can be a positive, but I think Moyes is slipping into a bad habit of switching people around when things aren't working, but rather than being more effective, it's meaning that we're losing our shape. I'd like to see him deliberately switch to something that we've worked on in training, instead of just hoping that a change will produce results.

Special invisible green square for you Brownz.

Yeah, we seem to have lost that 'in your face' style of defending. We really used to batter teams into surrender too, but we hardly threaten their goal these days if they defend reasonably well.

Can the Mods please ban the next bell who refers to us finishing 4th/5th two years ago? We finished in the top 4 in 2005 - 6 fooking years ago. We've been slowly regressing ever since, and not just due to other teams becoming flush and being able to spend to over-take us. I mean our football has been pretty toss and we stagnated so long ago that we're now in reverse gear.

Pass me the bleach.

May have bin mentioned earlier , but cba on reading thru this thread , I am a Moyes fan , but I feel now he has done all he can with what he has got. Things need freshening up both tactics and player wise.Everything seems so predictable and stale.

Not that I want him out , but want him to stop the negativity and ffs 4-5-1 at home...

I think the major problem yesterday was we gave the ball away cheaply on lots of occasions and that forced us back more than we ever should against fodder like QPR so it becomes more noticeable. Lack of a pressing game is a trend, though, and it is worrying. Something that defined pre-season games. I thought it might just have been us playing quality like Villarreal, but there's no aggression in the middle at all at the minute. Barkley isn't going to want to press and get snarled up in too many physical situations at this point after his long spell out, and anyway he looks to have been given the remit by Moyes to wait until the ball's turned over to us and then express himself, downgrading his combative defensive duties; Fellaini can do it but was played further up the pitch yesterday chasing the equaliser (and in any case, he can drop back too far sometimes to create almost a fifth defender!); Rodwell glides about doing his Birkdale not Kirkdale routine; Arteta's looked for ages like he's in his own bubble diconnected from the game. We can do that pressing game when confidence is high or when the MF galvanises itself when it's up against the odds against superior opposition and gambles by leaving space between themselves and the defence to go after the ball.

We're way too timid at the moment. We can only hope it's all about confidence and not a strategy being deployed.
