I think the major problem yesterday was we gave the ball away cheaply on lots of occasions and that forced us back more than we ever should against fodder like QPR so it becomes more noticeable. Lack of a pressing game is a trend, though, and it is worrying. Something that defined pre-season games. I thought it might just have been us playing quality like Villarreal, but there's no aggression in the middle at all at the minute. Barkley isn't going to want to press and get snarled up in too many physical situations at this point after his long spell out, and anyway he looks to have been given the remit by Moyes to wait until the ball's turned over to us and then express himself, downgrading his combative defensive duties; Fellaini can do it but was played further up the pitch yesterday chasing the equaliser (and in any case, he can drop back too far sometimes to create almost a fifth defender!); Rodwell glides about doing his Birkdale not Kirkdale routine; Arteta's looked for ages like he's in his own bubble diconnected from the game. We can do that pressing game when confidence is high or when the MF galvanises itself when it's up against the odds against superior opposition and gambles by leaving space between themselves and the defence to go after the ball.
We're way too timid at the moment. We can only hope it's all about confidence and not a strategy being deployed.
Rep to davek because it's good to see him talking about football. (And I agree with most of it!)
Part of the problem, I think, is that teams are playing against us like we used to play against 'superior' teams. We are set up to be 'better than that' in our style, if not in our formation, and it is, to be honest, a development that many were craving at the time. It works well if we score early, but soon degenerates into passing around the centre circle and along the defence like a tenth-rate Barcelona if it doesn't.
And then few look interested about getting stuck in or running to create space after having had opposing midfielders in their face for the previous 60 minutes.
The question I would ask Moyes is, if we have no recognised wingers and we have smaller players with decent close skills who like to come inside who we are playing in the first team (Arteta, Osman, Bily, Baines, Saha, even Barkley) why we appear to have virtually no success at running into the opponents' box playing one-twos. We seem instead to prefer to pump low flat crosses in from the wings or lob a slow ball to the back post. Or even the patented hoof from the fullback position.
The Moyes question is an interesting one.
The man has done a hell of a lot to make Everton better but his weaknesses are blatant and have been there a long time.
- Substitutions are laughable at times
- Team selection is usually too obvious
- The formation is ridiculous. 451 is only used to fit Cahill in I'm sure of it.
- And many more...
Now, there's been people bringing put the 'Moyes Out' banners and I really don't know where I am on that.
As pointed out he has his weaknesses. But who could we get who is better? And perhaps more interestingly, who would want to manage us?! The chairmans words this week have not exactly made us look attractive.
Moyes In or Moyes Out?!
I have no idea.
What a sh8te view on things. You can only use what you've got. His substitutions are sometimes questionable but hes the manager and I have faith in all of his decisions. One thing I do know is that we very very very rarely get thumped by a team. That shows tactical awareness.
4-5-1 is the very reason for this.
Without Moyes we are a fecking joke and thats that.

I think the Moyes question will be asked on Sunday in particular, but the true question is will Moyes give the right answers. Its a classic game where he gets it wrong but he need to get it right this time round.
