During the months of June and July the sun shines all day and all night in the north. In winter, Finland has similar periods of continuous darkness. At the dark times, everything is bathed in an strange blue light called kaamos.

Finland managed to kick serious Soviet Union butt in direct conflict, with only about 250,000 troops, while the Soviet Union had more than 1,000,000 men.

The amount you get fined for speeding on the roads in Finland depends on the amount you earn. A man with an annual income of 7€ million was recently charged 116,000€.

They also managed to keep entire platoons of the red army pinned down by a few men on skis, because the soviets would go defensive and turtle up at the first sign of attack.

It's arguably the finn's successes in that war, given how outnumbered and poorly armed they were, which led to Hitler underestimating Stalin and invading the USSR. They were also the only nazi aligned country not to be occupied afterwards, because the allies recognised that they were basically forced into an alliance with Hitler by Stalin and kept their noses pretty clean.

Fascinating stuff. I don't know anywhere near enough about history than I'd like to.
