Everton boss David Moyes sweats on deal for Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga - MirrorFootball.co.uk

Moyes has agreed a fee with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid for the 25-year-old defender but so far they have failed to match his salary request which is more than £50,000-a-week.

Heitinga was in Spain at the weekend as Atletico kicked off their new season and he is due to fly off with the Dutch squad in the next 48 hours - as Everton sweat over completing the transfer.

Boss Moyes wants Heitinga in to give him more strength at the back but the deal could collapse at the death as insiders reveal the sides are 'miles apart' over his personal package.

Shame, he would have been ideal.

We should have done a City and broadcast our wages first.
Heitinga would at least of had a look if any of his m8's from the pub were interested.

Bollocks.

Can we not have a whip around, if we need more money, like? I've got a fiver they can have.

You would take a player who is only interested in money?

Yes.

Listen I'm not arguing that 50 grand a week is enough and that theres no need to quibble over getting more than that.

But theres also agents involved. And theres the prestige/pride thing about taking such a big pay cut and saying 'why don't you think I'm worth more'.

Bottom line is he'll be a good buy for us and if we need to bust out the cash to get him here then we should do that.

Bearing in mind quite a few players have highest earner clauses.

So does anyone feel our wage structure is going to be adjusted?
How do we do it for one though and not the rest? It might be the quickest way to destroy team spirit.

Elaborate please bud.

He means a lot of our current players have it written into their contracts with Everton that they should be the highest paid player at the club. Hence you get several players on identical wages. So if Heitinga comes in and gets more than everyone else, everyone else will claim the same amount.

The questions are whether the club can afford the increased expenses and whether Heitinga is worth it.

I trust Moyes to make the right call.

And I'd still be willing to do a whip round if he needs the help.

I don't know the complete financial situation, obviously, but I think he'll improve the team and, if we can afford the wage increases, we should go for it. And the idea that we should walk away from negotiations the moment he asks for more wages than our first offer because that makes him a greedy merc is flat out stupid.
